Programs of Merit

We have several programs of merit that have served to promote a positive academic environment for our students. They are:

Peer Mediation -
A group of students in the fifth-eighth grade that are trained in a conflict resolution process. The Peer Mediators assist other students to resolve their own problems. Each year students go through a special training early in the fall.

Leadership Group -
A group of sixth-eighth graders who are working within smaller groups on projects. Our intent is to build leadership qualities.

Academic Teams -
WMS students have regained momentum in being on academic teams that compete in spelling, geography and mathematics. The science program has participated in a local and regional Solar Sprint program and has conducted a science fair for the last several years featuring Grade 8.

Student Council -
Our student council is an active voice within the middle school. The representatives and officers meet often planning school and community activities.

Sports -
Thanks to a combination of school staff and many volunteers, we run an excellent sports program with a high participation rate.

New Directions/Tobacco Control Grant -
New Directions develops a variety of asset building activities for the community and youth to work on together. The Tobacco Grant focuses on students from 10-15 years of age and adults. It includes activities centered on the adolescent. Both programs are structured by a committee that meets once a month.

Concert and Jazz Bands -
Our instrumental music program has extremely high participation. Students have the opportunity to receive small group lessons and participate in school concerts as well as special district-wide concerts.

Monthly Best Works Assemblies -
WMS meets as an entire group once a month to recognize special academic programs. It my involve music, poetry, a math league game, etc. Students are also recognized for special awards, honor roll, birthdays, student council events and more.
