1 NOTE "In the October, 1955 edition of Cotton Digest, national trade publication,
2 CONT appeared a cover story about a Terrell cotton merchant, J.B. McGinty.  By this
2 CONT time Mr. McGinty had become quite successful in the cotton business, with
2 CONT warehouses and buyers in three towns, and a fleet of trucks to haul cotton he
2 CONT bought to the southern mills and the Gullf, from where it was shipped to
2 CONT European and Japanese mills.
1 NOTE "As a young man, J.B., who was called "Jim" at the country schools he
2 CONT attended, was a working cowboy on the 6666, the fourth largest ranch in
2 CONT America today, where he broke broncs, rode herd on cattle, and ate from the
2 CONT chuck wagon.
1 NOTE "A man named Benedict, brother of a one-time University of Texas president,
2 CONT wrote a book, "A Tenderfoot on Gyp Water" in which it was stated that a
2 CONT 13-year-old boy named Jim McGinty rode a bronc in the Second Texas
2 CONT Cowboy Reunion that had killed two men, and rode it successfully.  One chapter
2 CONT was devoted to his brother, Marion McGinty.  The book, now a collector's item
2 CONT was edited by J. Frank Dobie.
1 NOTE "J.B. came to Ft. Worth on money borrowed from the 6666 manager to go to old
2 CONT Polytechnic College, where he studied business and played football.  While at
2 CONT Polytechnic he met a Professor Siler of whom he was very fond.  When Prof.
2 CONT Siler came to Terrell to North Texas University School, J.B. came as his
2 CONT assistant and to finish his business course.
1 NOTE "After finishing college, J.B. went to work for the large department store,
2 CONT Martin-Jarvis Co., where he succeeded Hugh McClung, who was later to become
2 CONT his brother-in-law.  He served as an understudy to Mr. R. Jarvis, who was
2 CONT vice-president, credit manager and cotton buyer for the firm, and he succeeded
2 CONT Mr. Jarvis when he retired January 1, 1912.
1 NOTE "While at North Texas University, J.B. met a young belle, Mary Breeden, whose
2 CONT family had come from Franklin County, Tennessee in the 1890's, and after a
2 CONT period of courtship they were married.  To them were born five children: three
2 CONT girls... and two sons....
1 NOTE "After Mr. McGinty had worked for Martin-Jarvis for a few years, he decided to
2 CONT go on his own and formed the J.B. McGinty Co.
1 NOTE "J.B. and Mary were determined their children would have good educations, and
2 CONT they sent them to some of the best universities in the country, from the
2 CONT University of California to Columbia in New York City.
1 NOTE "Mr. Mack," as a lot of his friends called him, did notknow what the term
2 CONT "public relations" meant, but he was gifted with a personality that attracted
2 CONT people.  He helped to send other children to college, and many a small
2 CONT struggling farmer, white and black, reported how he had helped him "to get out
2 CONT a crop."
1 NOTE "He was a (sic) of the Terrell school board, 1925-26-27, and was also mayor of
2 CONT the City of Terrell.  He was chairman of the board of Texas Muilitary College,
2 CONT charter member of Rotary, charter member of Oak Grove Country Club, and
2 CONT vice-president of the board of trustees of what is now Abilene Christian
2 CONT University for the longest record of service of any member at the time of his
2 CONT death.
1 NOTE "One of his main interests was Boles Home for children.  He was chairman of
2 CONT the board.  The new J.B. McGinty Administration Bldg. was named posthumously
2 CONT in his honor.
1 NOTE "J.B. was president of the Terrell Frozen Food Locker Co.; Vice-president of
2 CONT Martin-Jarvis Co.; director in Anderson-Clayton Co.; his business interests
2 CONT included Nor-Tex Lumber Co.; McGinty's Farmers Hardware Co.; Terrell Tractor
2 CONT Co. and McGinty Hardware Co. of Rockwall.  Two of his sons-in-law and his two
2 CONT sons worked with him in these projects.

1 NOTE In January, 1781 he was in Col. Charles Dabney's First Regiment.  The Regiment
2 CONT joined Gen. Stevens at Four Mile Creek in Henrico.  The regiment retreated
2 CONT into Culpeper, crossing the Rappahannock at Ely's Ford and recrossing at
2 CONT Raccoon Ford.  Then, marching by Pogue's Mill, the army took the Marquis Road
2 CONT to Mechunk Creek in Albemarle.  Breeden spent some time in camp at Sim's Neck
2 CONT in Pamunky, and then joined Gen. Weedon at White House Ferry.  During the
2 CONT siege of Yorktown, he was stationed at Ware Church near Gloucester.  His
2 CONT company was discharged only a few days before the surrender.

1 NOTE      On this 1st day of October 1832, formally appeared in open court, before
2 CONT the County Court of Spotsylvania, in the state aforesaid, Enoch Breeden, a
2 CONT resident of the said county, aged twenty three years and eight months, who
2 CONT being just duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make to following
2 CONT declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June
2 CONT 7th 1832.
1 NOTE      That he was born in Maryland in the month of January 1759 and is now in
2 CONT his 74th year.  That his Father removed himself and his family to Virginia
2 CONT when this applicant was about seven years of age.  That he resided in Charles
2 CONT City County, when the Revolutionary War comminced.  That his father having
2 CONT entered the Continental army at the beginning of the war, (from which he never
2 CONT returned,)this applicant and his mother, removed to King William County, where
2 CONT two of his brothers resided.  That he entered the Virginia militia, in King
2 CONT William County in the summer of 1776, (having been crafted, and served a three
2 CONT months tour of duty.  In this tour of service he was in Captain Mordicai
2 CONT Abrahams company, and the regiment to which his company was attached, was as
2 CONT ____ as this applicant __________ commanded by Colonel Ennis.  That he was
2 CONT marched to Hampton where his company remained until the end of the tour, this
2 CONT applicant having in consequence of the ague & fever been permitted to
2 CONT return home a few days before.  That he served several other short tours of
2 CONT duty, as a volunteer, and as the substitute of his brothers Moody and Caleb
2 CONT Breedon, who had families, and who had to take care of this applicants
2 CONT mother. The circumstances under which these tours were performed were these -
2 CONT King William County in which he lived, lies in tide water, and was frequently
2 CONT liable to the ________, of the enemy while their ships were in York river -
2 CONT their frequent landings caused much alarm and the militia were frequently
2 CONT moved out, to resist & repel them.  In these short trous he was under the
2 CONT command of Colonel Hickman, and of Captain Mordicai Abrahams, Christopher
2 CONT Tompkins, Mordicai Booth and Harry Quarles.  This kind of militia service was
2 CONT performed by him at intervals as required until January 1781.  In that month
2 CONT he was crafted into service, and remained in the service, performing his own
2 CONT tour and in the substitute of his two brothers until the latter end of October
2 CONT in that year.  In this service Captain Drury was his first Captain, Captain
2 CONT Booth commanded him part of the time, and Captain Abrahams the latter part of
2 CONT the service.  The first regiment to which his company was attached was
2 CONT commanded by Colonel Charles Cabney.  In this tour, the regiment joined
2 CONT General Stevens command, at Four Mile Creek in Henrico County and from there,
2 CONT the troops retreated from the British, through Hanover and Spotsylvania
2 CONT counties into Culpepper County, crossing the Rappahannock at Elys Ford, the
2 CONT whole way in the command of General Lafayette.  A short time after they
2 CONT recrossed the river at Racoon Ford into Orange County, and marched to Pogues?
2 CONT mill in Orange County when they joined the regular army, and where General
2 CONT Wayne joined them with their regiment and some artillery.  From that point
2 CONT they marched up the Mar?????? new road, _______ it as they went along to
2 CONT Machunk? Creek in the lower end of Albemarle, (the force was then considered
2 CONT strong enough to meet the enemy - and the were marched down the Three Chopped
2 CONT Road towards Richmond.  While on this road they were joined by Aaron Ste____
2 CONT with some troops and they were marched into the lower end of Hanover.  They
2 CONT were encamped for some time at Simms ______ in Pamunkey, where the river makes
2 CONT a bend, like a horse shoe, and were from there marched down the country
2 CONT through New Kent to near Jamestown.  From the encampment here, the applicant
2 CONT was detached to carry a parcel of broken _______ _____ to King William County
2 CONT and on his return to the army in four days he found that there had been an
2 CONT engagement with the enemy in which they had the advantage of the American
2 CONT army.  A detachment of about six hundred men under the command of Major
2 CONT Campbell and Cary and of Colonel Ennis, was ordered to the north side of York
2 CONT River.  This applicant was in Major Campbells battalion.  They crossed York
2 CONT River at White ____ ferry, in the month of August, as well as this applicant
2 CONT recollects, where they joined General Weedons? army.  They were then marched
2 CONT down to Ware? Church in Gloucester County where they were joined by the French
2 CONT _____ under Duke Lauzan?.  Those troopers all wore large mustachias on their
2 CONT upper lips and very large whiskers.  Lower down they were joined by a large
2 CONT body of French infantry, ___ _______ near Gloucester town, the Duke Lauzan
2 CONT _____ who was in advance, had a skimish with the enemys hourse and beat them
2 CONT back to their entrenchment.  This applicants regiment was not in the
2 CONT engagement, but was encamped on the battle ground immediately after, where it
2 CONT remained with the army blocking the British who were in Gloucester town until
2 CONT their surrender.  A few days before that event, the three King William militia
2 CONT companies, to one of which this applicant belonged, were sent up to their own
2 CONT county, where they remained until their discharge? immediately after the
2 CONT surrender of Cornwillis.  After that event this applicant with the other
2 CONT militia was permitted to return home, without any written discharge.  That a
2 CONT few years after the war this applicant removed to Spotsylvania County, where
2 CONT he has resided for forty five years and where he now resides.  That he has no
2 CONT documentary witness of his services.  That he knows of no person alive whose
2 CONT testimony he can procure, who can testify to his services except Ptolemy
2 CONT Powell of said county, whose affidavit is herewith annexed.
1 NOTE      He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity
2 CONT except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of
2 CONT the agency of any state.

2 CONT this deponent being there about 14 years of age & a resident of King William
2 CONT County having a brother in the militia of that county then in service in the
2 CONT Gloucester side of York River went down to see his brother & his brother
2 CONT working to see his family the captain, where same was Abrahams ________ __
2 CONT _______ as a substitute for his brother until his return.  The deponent
2 CONT ________ a fortnight & was in the same _____ with Enoch Breeden __ _ _________
2 CONT in the same company.  A Major Campbell commanded the battalion? Sworn to &
2 CONT _______ the ___ 1 year of _____, Ptolemy Powell (signature).

2 CONT the County Court of Spotsylvania now sitting Enoch Breeden, who by way of
2 CONT amendment to his foregoing declaration, _______ ___ ____ before this court on
2 CONT the 1st day of October 1832.  ________ ________ & states that by means of ___
2 CONT age & the consequent lapse of memory, he cannot swear pertaining as to the
2 CONT precise length of his service - but according to the best of his recollection
2 CONT he served not less than the periods memtioned _____ and in the following
2 CONT _____.  In the year 1776 he served as a private for three months under Captain
2 CONT Mordicai Abrahams.  That between this tour and January 1781 he served several
2 CONT short tours also as a private under Captains Abrahams & Thompson?, Booth &
2 CONT Quarles, and in these tours he served altogether at least twelve months, altho
2 CONT his recollection will not enable him to state precisely, the time of service
2 CONT on each tour.  From the 15th of Jamnuary 1781 untill October of that year
2 CONT immediately after the surrender of Cornwaller at York town he was in service
2 CONT as a private none months.  That he served in the militia of Virginia in the
2 CONT revolution in the whole 24 months.  That for this service he claims a pension
2 CONT as stated in his declaration aforesaid.  That he has no written record of his
2 CONT age.  And that John A Billingsley & Thomas Hicks to whom he is known in his
2 CONT neighborhood can testify to his character for verasity?, and their belief of
2 CONT his services as a soldier of the revolution.
1 NOTE And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of
2 CONT the matter & after _______ the ___________ prescribed by the War Department
2 CONT that the above named applicant was a Soldier of the revolution and served as
2 CONT he states.  And the Court further certifies that it appears that John A
2 CONT Billingsley who has signed the foreceding? certificate is a clergyman resident
2 CONT in the said county.  And that Thomas Hicks who has also signed the same is a
2 CONT resident also in the said county.  And that Ptolomy Powell whose affidavit is
2 CONT also annexed is also a resident of the said county and that each and all of
2 CONT these persons are credible ______ and that their statements are highly worthy

2 CONT that his name was placed on the pension roll of the State of Virginia, from
2 CONT where he is about to remove.  That he is about to reside in the State of
2 CONT Tennessee, where he intends to remain, and wishes his pension to be there
2 CONT available, in future.  The following are his reasons for removing from
2 CONT Virginia to Tennessee - for the willfare & benefit of my children one of whom
2 CONT is at present residing there & four others are removing with me.

1 NOTE Lila DeFord Breeden was a unique and talented woman.  She ventured into the
2 CONT business world in the opening of the first millinery shop in Terrell.  She
2 CONT went to Chicago twice a year to market and brought home the latest spring and
2 CONT fall fashions.  It was on one of these trips that she became interested in the
2 CONT new Marinella method of beauty care and she sent a young .... - and then
2 CONT offered it to her customers in Terrell.  All of this was innovative and in
2 CONT 1913, Mrs. P.C. Breedens Millinery Shop was listed in Dun and Bradstreet, the
2 CONT only millinery shop listed in Terrell.... In those days, a woman in business
2 CONT was a rare thing and Mrs. Breeden kept ahead of the times with her electric
2 CONT car (the first in the city) and her beautiful hats."

1 NOTE "Thomas Baldwin, who was knocked down and seriously injured by a Ford car on
2 CONT the East Sixth avenue road Saturday night, was reported in a critical
2 CONT condition last night.  He has been semi-conscious or unconscious since the
2 CONT accident.  He is suffering from a broken ankle, a broken shoulder, a broken
2 CONT arm, a long gash on his head and internal injuries.
1 NOTE "The police yesterday went to Kansas City and brought Earl Warford and
2 CONT Clarence Warford back with them.  The two brothers admitted racing with a Ford
2 CONT roadster near the scene of the accident Saturday night.  They said a tire on
2 CONT the roadster blew out and it looked as if the roadster was going into the
2 CONT ditch but they did not stop.  They said they did not see Baldwin on the road.
2 CONT W. G. Tandy, chief of Police, questioned the two brothers several hours last
2 CONT night and then turned them loose.  He said he was convinced they had told him
2 CONT the truth.  The police have been unable to find any more clues which may lead
2 CONT to the identity of the speeding driver who ran away after hitting Baldwin.

1 NOTE "Mr. Warford was born in Fort Scott but spent most of his life in Iola and was educated in the schools here.  He was a brick mason by trade and moved to Galveston a few years ago.
1 NOTE "He was fishing in the surf last Tuesday afternoon when a large breaker knocked him off his feet.  He was rescued within fifteen or twenty minutes but could not be revived.  He was considered an expert swimmer and surf fisherman and friends are at a

2 CONT father, Joel, a soldier in the army of the Duke of Monmouth, landed in
2 CONT Jamestown, Virginia in 1690.  The Duke, revolting against the Roman Catholic
2 CONT government of James II was overthrown in the Battle of Sedgemore, near
2 CONT Bridgewater, England on July 13, 1685.  The Duke was executed in London for
2 CONT high treason, but Joel Lipscomb fled for his life to America, settling finally
2 CONT in Spottsylvania County, Virginia.  Joel Lipscomb had two sons, John and
2 CONT Thomas.  John drifted to Kentucky and was killed by the Indians.  The Lipscomb
2 CONT family, then, descended from Thomas."

1 NOTE "Robert McGinty, fourth son of Robert and Deborah, was born in 1782, the only
2 CONT official birthdate of any of the sons, established by the U.S. census of 1850,
2 CONT which gave his age as 68.  The skip in births from 1776 to 1782 is explained
2 CONT by Robert I being in the Revolution.  Robert II was only 20 during the first
2 CONT lottery, but got two draws in 1820.  He married Penelope Moore in 1807, and
2 CONT they had a very large family.  Two of the sons came with him to Texas in 1853.
2 CONT  He and Penelope were baptized into the Church at the same time, December,
2 CONT 1827; they were lettered out in 1835.  Some time after this Penelope died;
2 CONT Robert returned to the Church with a new wife, Elanna, in 1851.  September 17,
2 CONT 1853, they took their letters out - at the same time as the exodus to Texas.
2 CONT Two sons were lettered out at the same time;  they were John and William.

1 NOTE When Robert was about twenty he started to America with James and Alexander,
2 CONT two of his brothers (about 1765).  They were shipwrecked and Alexander was
2 CONT lost at sea.  James and Robert were rescued and landed in New York City.  They
2 CONT got seperated and were lost from each other.  Robert E. was sent into North
2 CONT Carolina to get land.  Robert moved to Agusta County, Virginia, where he met
2 CONT and married Deborah Wright about 1767.  Robert lived over 100 years.  His will
2 CONT is on record in Wilkes County, Georgia.  He died 1841.  He was listed in
2 CONT Wilkes County, Georgia as a soldier from 1778 to 1782.

1 NOTE "Robert McGinty was born in Augusta County, Virginia in 1746, and moved with
2 CONT his family to North Carolina when he was about 16 years old.  He got his
2 CONT first schooling in the Mecklinburg County Presbyterian Schools, established in
2 CONT all the Scotch-Irish settlements around Charlotte.   It was here that the
2 CONT family changed from the Presbyterian Church to the Baptist faith.  Alexander,
2 CONT the oldest son, lived and died near his father's place; he left his will,
2 CONT written in 1802.  One of his sons, Alexander, Jr., became one of the first
2 CONT lawyers in the county.  He took his license the same time that Andrew Jackson
2 CONT took his; they were neighbors and raised up together.  James remained here the
2 CONT rest of his life, but after the war, John and Robert went to Georgia to claim
2 CONT their service grants; both lived in Wilkes County on Kettle Creek in 1785.
2 CONT But before this time, Robert had married Deborah Wright, another family of a
2 CONT Virginia Valley Colony.  By 1777, we find them living on the Germany Creek,
2 CONT midway between the settlement on the Kiokee Creek and the Wrightsboro
2 CONT settlement on the western part of what is now McDuffie County.  Robert and
2 CONT Deborah lived there until the war reached these upper settlements in late
2 CONT 1779; then they were forced to leave their home before the threat of teh
2 CONT British Army, the Tories and the Indians.  After the war was over they
2 CONT returned to their ruined cabin and lands.  Robert then got a service grant of
2 CONT 250 acres, as well as a headright of 500 acres; he settled on Kettle Creek in
2 CONT Wilkes County.  Both he and Deborah joined the Phillips Mill Baptist Church,
2 CONT under Silas Mercer, and Robert was licensed to preach by this church.  He sold
2 CONT off his land in the upper country and moved down into Washington County where
2 CONT he got land on his refugee services; by new boundaries he was cut off into
2 CONT Hancock County and raised his family there.  Their records are in the Island
2 CONT Creek Baptist Church in that county.  He was in that Church for twenty-two
2 CONT years, then moved down to take a church in Jones County.  He died in Monroe
2 CONT County in Jamuary of 1841 at the age of 95.
1 NOTE Robert was a private under Elijah Clarke during the Revolution, and went with
2 CONT him to the Carolinas, as well as serving a local militia in Georgia.  He was
2 CONT with the refugees in the Carolinas after the settlers were driven from the
2 CONT frontier settlements, and saw service in both upper South Carolina and in
2 CONT North Carolina.  He got 250 acres of good land for his services during the war
2 CONT in Georgia, and a bonus grant for refugee service; his certificate was signed
2 CONT by Col. Elijah Clarke, as shown below.
1 NOTE      'This is to certify that Robert McGinty hath steadfastly done his duty,
2 CONT       from the time of passing an act at Augusta, to wit, on the 20th of
2 CONT       August until the total expulsion of the British from the State; and
2 CONT       the said Robert McGinty cannot be, to my knowledge or belief, be
2 CONT       convicted of plundering or distressing the country; and is therefore,
2 CONT       under the said Act, entitled to a bounty of Two Hundred and Fifty
2 CONT       Acres of Good Land, free from taxes for ten years....

2 CONT of the family kept the Presbyterian faith, others changed as they moved
2 CONT southward.  John Wright, the father of Deborah, was, also, a Baptist preacher.
2 CONT His signature was found on marriage licenses as 'MG' - Minister of God.

2 CONT few years after.  Robert continued his church work as he moved into the
2 CONT different Georgia counties.  'Campbell's History of Georgia Baptist' gives the
2 CONT following on Robert McGinty.

2 CONT       a person of easy and polite manners, and a sound and sensible preacher.
2 CONT       While in the Flint Association he seems to have done little for missions
2 CONT       owing, perhaps, to the fact he was surrounded by so much opposition.....
2 CONT       he was baptized in 1787 at Phillips Mill Church in Wilkes County, at the
2 CONT       same time as Jesse Mercer, by Silas mercer; he was licensed by that
2 CONT       church in 1790, and in 1799 was ordained by the Island Creek Church
2 CONT       in Hancock County.'
1 NOTE Robert and Deborah were the parents of twelve sons and a daughter.  They were
2 CONT a straight Baptist family, and but for a few exceptions the generations have
2 CONT remained Baptist.  Every on e of the twelve sons were active in the Church;
2 CONT three were ministers, and several were elders and deacons.  The children were
2 CONT all living when Robert died, and were all named in his will.  There is no
2 CONT record of the daughter, as her married name was not given....
1 NOTE When Robert died in 1841, most of his family were still in central Georgia.
2 CONT The oldest son Joseph, had gone to Mississippi Territory in 1805.  James and
2 CONT Washington had gone to Alabama in 1835; in 1850 two sons went west, Thomas and
2 CONT his family to Northern Louisiana; Robert and his two sons went to the Brasos
2 CONT River in Texas in 1835.  Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were in Jones County,
2 CONT while the rest of the family lived in counties nearby.

1 NOTE "I have heard the story about a shipwreck and I have heard that they came in
2 CONT through Virginia, but I think neither of these stories jive with the material
2 CONT that grandfather had.  His material stated that they came in through
2 CONT Philadelphia and went across Pennsylvania into Cumberland County; then down
2 CONT the "Great Wagon Road" to Augusta County, Virginia, and on into North Carolina
2 CONT from there.  Alexander had a son, Alexander, Jr. who was married in Charlotte
2 CONT and there is quite a bit written about this family.  Robert Earl married
2 CONT Deborah Wright in Charlotte and then fought in the militia during the
2 CONT revolution.  Subsequently, they received land grants in Columbia County,
2 CONT Georgia, but most of their early holdings were in Wilkes County where they
2 CONT lived on Kettle Creek.  Robert was ordained on the same day Silas Mercer
2 CONT ordained his son there at the Mills Creek Baptist Church near Kettle Creek in
2 CONT Wilkes County.

1 NOTE "Robert McGinty, it is understood, was reared as a preacher, at Phillips'
2 CONT mill, in Wilkes county, where he is mentioned as a licensed preacher in 1790.
2 CONT In 1799, he is an ordained minister in Island creek church, Hancock.  As
2 CONT pastor of Bethel, in Jones, (now extince,) he is moderator of the Ocmulgee
2 CONT Association.  From Jones, he removed into Monroe - is the first moderator of
2 CONT the Flint river Association, and continued so till age and infirmity compelled
2 CONT him to decline serving the churches.  In 1803, he is one of the General
2 CONT Committee of Georgia Baptists, and was president of the Ocmulgee Missionary
2 CONT Society about 1819 for some time.  In 1829, he was chariman of the Flint
2 CONT Committee, which went to Sharon churchand was the occasion of so much trouble
2 CONT and contention.  When expostulated with by Rev. Jesse Mercer, he writes that
2 CONT their "object was to reach Willson," the pastor.  Charity would fain believe
2 CONT that he repented of the part he took in that transaction.

2 CONT snow) is a Donegal surname now found chiefly in the southeastern part of that
2 CONT county bordering on Co. Tyrone and Co. Fermanagh.  As Ginty, it is also fairly
2 CONT numerous in Co. Mayo - this presumably represents the great migration of
2 CONT Donegal families to north Connacht at the time of the Plantation of Ulster in

1 NOTE "John McGinty...came from County Donegal, Ireland to Augusta County, Virginia,
2 CONT between 1738 and 1740, died in this country in 1763, proven by his will of
2 CONT that year.  His will names his family....  Records show that Alexander
2 CONT remained in Augusta County and he had sons, James, John and Robert, perhaps
2 CONT others;  there are war records of John and James.  Some went to Kentucky with
2 CONT Daniel Boone, and later records show that Alexander died in Fayette County,
2 CONT now West Virginia.  In 1794 Robert and John came home from kentucky to bury
2 CONT their father and settle the estate.  It is thought that James McGinty in

1 NOTE "John McGinty, the 2nd, was named by his father to take charge of his estate.
2 CONT John lived in the Greenbrier Settlement on Muddy Creek.  Just at this time,
2 CONT 1762, the Indians began to raid the white settlements.  So after the death of
2 CONT his father, John decided to move south.  He left his place with a neighbor to
2 CONT sell.  This was done and the deed was recorded.  In the meantime John had
2 CONT moved on to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.  By these deeds the move was
2 CONT placed at 1763.  Shortly after he left Virginia the settlement was wiped out
2 CONT by the Indians.  These raids caused many of the settlers to move to the
2 CONT Carolinas.  John was married to Sarah ----? and had four known sons, perhaps
2 CONT more.  They were Alexander, John, James, and Robert.  He settled on Sugar
2 CONT Creek, now the location of Charlotte, North Carolina.  His place was near the
2 CONT old Sugar Creek Presbyterian Meeting House.  Alexander lived and died at Sugar
2 CONT Creek;  James and John came down into Wilkes County, Georgia, and both took
2 CONT part in the Revolution.  John later made his home in Wilkes County.  He...
2 CONT heads the John A. McGinty line.   Robert is head of the Louisiana line.  Very
2 CONT little is known of James; he seems to have gone to Georgia, then returned, and

2 CONT of the Old Indian Boundary Line when the limits of the county were extended by
2 CONT the Legislature following the Treaty of Washington in 1805 came William Thomas
2 CONT McGinty, who made his home on the 'Ridge' separating Commissioner and Big
2 CONT Sandy Creeks, where the old Hartford Road crosses the Irwinton and Macon
2 CONT Highway.
1 NOTE The number of families closely connected by blood or marriage came with him,
2 CONT among these being the Castleburys, the Gays and others, making their homes
2 CONT also in this vicinity.
1 NOTE These families had no sooner completed the building of their cabins and
2 CONT cleared the necessary fields than they set about organizing a church.  Ramah
2 CONT Church, the oldest church now in existence in the county, was the result and
2 CONT we find McGinty as one of the original members.
1 NOTE At his own expense and without the aid of the other members of the church,
2 CONT McGinty built the first church - although the members later agreed to pay him
2 CONT something.  The old minutes of Ramah show that he was a very active membter
2 CONT and was constantly laboring for its upbuilding.
1 NOTE In 1809, his known ability caused him to be selected by the Georgia
2 CONT Legislature as one of the Commissioners to construct the Hartford Road.  The
2 CONT urgent necessity of buildling this road with the least possible delay in order
2 CONT to avery the Great Crisis about to confront Georgia, bespeaks for his the
2 CONT confidence of the General Assembly in this ability and his patriotism.  It was
2 CONT necessary to draft the able-bodied men subject to such duties, assign in to
2 CONT squads, direct clearing of the underbrush, the cutting of the big trees to a
2 CONT level with the ground, the leveling of the rough places, the making possible
2 CONT of boggy places and streams, and all the other things essential to the
2 CONT construction of a road through "the forest primeval."  Recently when the John
2 CONT Ball Chapter, D.A.R., erected the marker on the Old Hartford Road, the site of
2 CONT his old home was selected.
1 NOTE The growing travel between Milledgeville, Marion and Hartford and the
2 CONT establishing of a line of stage coaches made it necessary for stations to be
2 CONT established every ten miles where the tired horses having been driven at a
2 CONT gallop the greater part of the way were exchanged for fresh ones, which had
2 CONT been hastily harnessed and gotten ready when the state driver's bugle was
2 CONT heard in the distance announcing his approach.  Quick to grasp the opportunity
2 CONT McGinty built a tavern which tradition says was well equipped to satisfy the
2 CONT hunger as well as the thirst of the wayfarer.

1 NOTE "Washington McGinty..., out of all the family, has the largest family and the
2 CONT most descendants.  He joined the island Creek Church August 31, 1805; he was
2 CONT excluded in June, 1814, restored to membership in 1816, then removed his
2 CONT letter Januart, 1817, to join the Ramah Church in Wilkerson County, where he
2 CONT remained until he moved to Alabama in 1835.  In 1813 he married Tabitha
2 CONT Moore; she joined Ramah; she also put her letter in to Ramah Church in 1818.
2 CONT By 1821 Tabitha and Washington had three sons and a daughter; then she died.
2 CONT Washington had married Naomi Moore, the sister of Tabitha, by 1825, and they
2 CONT had a son and three daughters.  In 1835 he moved his family into a place
2 CONT called McGinty Cross Roads, later changed to River View.  Here he was a member
2 CONT of the Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church.  Naomi died; then Washington married
2 CONT the third time; some say it was his fourth time, but the records of Elizabeth
2 CONT Harrington show that she was his third wife.  They had four children, two
2 CONT boys and two girls.  He had twelve children in all, and each of these children
2 CONT had a large family.  In 1850 he was excluded from the church over money
2 CONT matters.  After this he moved into Randolph County where he died in 1872."
