~ABOUT THE BREEDER~

Born and raised in Munich, Germany I came to the USA in 1976. I attended the University of Buffalo where I received a Bachelor of Arts. I first fell in love with showing and breeding rabbits during a 4H project with my daughter.  When a friend invited me to their bird show, I was looking forward to a new experience. I saw many birds I liked, and decided on those cute little fat birds called "Fifes". After much success breeding the fife, I added other types of birds to my bird room. A friend insisted that I have a pair of American Singers (AS). I gave in for the sake of our friendship. As time went by, I bred more and more American Singers (AS). At first to me, the American Singer male sounded like all the other males. Then something happened, a song that did not sound like the rest of the birds in my aviary.

My name is Dorothea, and I call my aviary the "Flying Angels Aviary". I have been breeding American Singers for close to ten years.  During the time I bred canaries sweet beautiful intelligent Parrotlets caught my attention. I have had Parrotlets for about 6 years; but did not breed them for that long. The breeding of Parrotlets started about 3-4 years ago. They are little Angels that you can cuddle with and kiss and teach little tricks. They are the intelligence of a Amazon wrapped in a tiny package!

Sometimes it seems that I have too many breeder cages, but seeing the little angelic miracles come from nothing into a full grown bird that is able to hold his body in the air if he so desires is amazing! This is what keeps me going!

I have been showing birds since 1999 (before that my daughter was showing rabbits that I was participating in.) For a canary the showing season is short, it goes from October till the first week in December and then it is time to set up for breeding again (For Parrotlets the season is different because they breed any time they feel like it.)

I have won many ribbons. I bring them home, take a picture sometimes and then donate them back to the bird clubs. (How many of those things can you dust all the time?) We try to recycle ribbons and trophies to save money for the clubs.

Showing American Singers is different than showing other birds. American Singers are mainly judged on their song. The other birds get shown for body type, feather arrangement, other songs (roller, waterschlager) or color.  My love of the American Singer Canary has also led me to become a judge at the shows.  I simply love to be around these little birds.

My dream is to retire from my 40 hour a week job, and do nothing but deal with my little angels all day long. Hey, if I win the lotto maybe I can do that some day!
