Story of the Play
THE HEIRESS (set in 1850) is about the love of a shy and plain young woman, Catherine, for a charming young man , Morris, who seems to see beyond her social ineptitude and return her love. Her father , the wealthy Dr Sloper, suspects that he is a fortune hunter and forbids their marriage. Sloper's opinion of Morris seems confirmed when he fails to appear for their planned elopement after learning that Catherine will be disinherited if they marry. Two years after Sloper's death, Morris appears again and asks Catherine to marry him. Catherine suggests that they carry out the plans they had made originally, but when Morris returns at the appointed time, Catherine leaves him knocking frantically at the door.
