We left home on 12-18 in a light rain and
headed east through Palm Springs then south to the border town of
Calexico. We knew the rain would end when we hit the desert and it did,
but a high wind pushed us along at a good clip.
Fueled up and crossed the border to get our tourist visas. We pulled into
the very crowded parking we used last time only to find the office closed.
A very helpful lady directed us to another building on the other side of
the crossing lanes, we walked across all the traffic not once but twice
due to my lack of fluency in Spanish. Finally visas in hand we
crossed the border into Mexicali and worked our way through town, first a
stop at the Banamex ATM for a peso supply, then as if by magic a COSTCO
store appeared and I ran in for our adult beverage supply (tequila!). Now
in heavy traffic we work our way through town and into the desert headed
for one our favorite towns, San Felipe. Before we reached SF and we ran
out of daylight we discussed a place to camp for the night and decided on
a spot just beyond Laguna Salada, |
First some ok pavement then we hit the real
Baja, potholes and world class washboard. Old cars from the past dot the
roadsides, evidence the roads were once a lot worse than now.
We stop at a favorite beach, break out the
fishing poles and head for the water,

After morning coffee, eggs
and hot tortillas
we head south for Gonzaga Bay. Diesel, gasoline available from Rancho
Grande, no ice. Eventually we head for Bahia de Los Angeles. |
a nice level place
with a great view of the upper gulf desert, we cooked dinner and jumped into
the sack just after dark.
In San Felipe we picked up some essential supplies (tortillas and beer), a
yummy hot pork torta (sandwich) and we headed south.
Paul
makes a cast, bright silver breaks the water and a Corvina puts up a hard
fight. Deloris is casting her lure as far as she can and knows she can catch a
bigger one. Paul catches another and it's all over, not another bite for
either of us so we head for tonight's camp.
A beach we camped in the early 80's by dune buggy seems perfect so we make
camp for the night.

A day of hiking,
fishing , R&R, followed by margies and shrimp on the grill sent us to
bed early and happy. Early rain woke us up and we scrambled to gather up
camp, with everything picked and relatively dry we decided to head south.
Late afternoon found us checking into the Serinadad hotel in Mulegé. We
needed amenities and meals only the hotel could provide and we had a great
night followed by breakfast before heading for La Paz.
