These pages are my attempts to gather sources for deaths in primarily Ross county Ohio for the years before probate courts kept records. I have used the following sources.... The Scioto Gazette published in Chillicothe Ohio and now known as the Chillicothe Gazette and the Chillicothe Advertiser. Also the ledgers of Doctor L.W. Foulke which can be found at the Mckell Library in Chillicothe. I also hope in the future to keep adding to the Scioto Gazette Index as I get the time. I have transcribed the 1850 and 1860 Ross Co. Mortality Schedules. A valuable record in a time when deaths were not generaly recorded.
Most of the death notices are very brief, occasionaly a full obituary. Some of those from other states and counties refer to the person has having been "formerly" of Ross Co. or Chillicothe. A few were abstracted from news stories on murders or accidents. *****THE DATES LISTED ARE DATES OF THE NEWSPAPER NOT THE DEATH OF THE PERSON****
I would be happy to go make you a copy of an obituary. I cannot make copies of the Dr. Foulke ledgers. You will have to write the Mckell Library. For a copy of an obit please send a self addressed stamped envelope and $3.00 to me at the following address.
