Police Motorcycle Operations Training is a privately operated training program for Police Motor Officers in Western Pennsylvania and the tri state area. This program is designed to enhance the safety and riding abilities of the Motor Officer during the performance of his duties. The Police Motor Operator program is a 2 week course that covers Basic Police Riding skills for Motor officers, including low speed maneuverability, emergency braking and evasive maneuvering as well as higher speed operation. The program also covers tactical use of the motorcycle in patrol duties and during traffic stops and other special duties such as escorts and traffic enforcement. A 3 day annual refresher and recertification course is also available upon request. The course curriculum is combined from Northwestern University and the University of North Florida, Institute of Police Technology and Management. The instructors are all active police officers that are dedicated to enhance rider safety and motor training in the tri state area. Many departments are content to provide their officers with basic rider training such as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Although this is an excellent course for the beginning rider, they are failing to go the step further and provide their officers with the training that is essential for reducing the number and severity of accidents that involve Police Motor officers. Police officers ride in many different conditions than civilian riders and require a much higher level of training. In the end this training is beneficial to the officer and the department by reducing claims from crashes for both property and injury. Having training available in the tri state area also reduces the cost significantly of sending officers to training at out of state venues that require costly boarding and per diem. All students attending the course must be currently employed by a Law Enforcement Agency and be on Department time during the course. The cost of the course is $500.00 per rider. Grant money is available from the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission for departments in Pennsylvania that want to sponsor a class for a minimum of 12 students. Riders are required to furnish a department motorcycle and proper protective riding gear. PMOT will provide training at your location.
