North American Nebula

NGC 7000, the famous North American Nebula, is an emission nebula in Cygnus.  Under a dark sky, this region of the Milky Way can be seen with the unaided eye.  The large nebula is faint but can be observed with a telescope, especially one equipped with an O III filter.  Long exposure   photographs reveal why it is named the North American Nebula.  On the right is another emission nebula, IC 5067-70, the Pelican Nebula.  A dark nebula of dust   separates the two and creates the distinct region of the "Gulf of Mexico".
