Deep Sky

Jupiter has already set? Saturn won't rise for another four hours? It's nearly New Moon? Well, you're in luck. With no planets to distract you, swing your telescope to a few of the Messier objects. Or some of the well known NGCs, or how about an obscure UGC or maybe something from the Shakhbazian Catalog of Compact Groups of Galaxies. (Yes, this is a real catalog!) There's a lifetime worth of objects to investigate in the deep sky.

I'm currently in the middle of the Herschel 400 list. While I still have a good ways to go, there are large swaths of R.A. that have been checked off, leaving me with a good bit of time on my hands until unobserved Herschel objects rotate into view. In the meantime, I've added the Arp Catalog of Peculiar Galaxies to my stack-o-stuff to keep me busy.
