BFSP Aurora
The Black Forest Star Party 2002

Observing Report - BFSP '02

Well, the 2002 edition of the Black Forest Star Party is history. The BFSP is really becoming quite an event, drawing another record crowd with over 500 enthusiasts attending this year.

The most notable event over the weekend-long party was the awesome aurora that occurred on Saturday night. It began at sunset with a faint band of green glow along the northern horizon. It soon exploded into brilliant spikes and sheets of colored light, marching across the northern sky. At times the display made it past the zenith! The display lasted for around two hours before it faded into a slight northern glow. In the wee hours of Sunday morning, it started back up again, only this time as pale grey horizontal waves of light quickly leaping off of the horizon.

Below are some pics from the event.
