| | Leif's Vinland and its true location
have sparked scholarly debate for centuries. Along the way many myths and
outright fabrications / distortions have been accepted as facts.
The goal here is to present a fair picture
of what is known of Vinland and its attributes. Along the way, popularly
accepted falsehoods, such as L'Anse aux Meadows being Leif's Vinland, will be dispelled.
- Vinland Explored
-
- Each of the principle Vinland Voyages is addressed here.
Drawn from the richly detailed saga records, these
narratives yield tantalizing glimpses of a new world and its earliest
recorded explorations.
- The Eriksson Rune
Stone
-
- Found off the shore of an obscure New England island nearly a
century ago, this rock with its brief inscription may offer a clue to
Vinland's true location. Once dismissed as a forgery, evidence
is presented here that shows that its dismissal may well have been
premature. Why? Because the "facts" used to
dismiss it were false.
-
- Other Clues?
-
- From the artic regions of northern Canada to Mexico and from the
East Coast all the way to Minnesota alleged clues to Vinland and the
extent of the Norse voyages have been 'found.' Some are obvious
forgeries and fakes, others may legitimately offer some bona fide
evidence.
- L'Anse aux Meadows
-
- Once discovered by Helge Ingstad and his wife, L'Anse aux
Meadows quickly became accepted as being Leif's Vinland. This
despite the simple fact that not one shred of the historical saga
evidence matched the site. Truth has been cast aside to support
Ingstad's untenable claims for this bleak, yet undeniably Norse
outpost. The short lived settlement lies far North of Leif's
Vinland, a fact that can easily be established.
-
- Other Vinland Myths
-
- Truth often vanishes in history. Vinland has not been
immune to this sad reality. Some of the more common myths are
addressed here.
