Mr. Smolak Awarded the Silver Beaver!
Silver Beaver
At the Council Recognition Dinner on November 9th, Jan was awarded the Silver Beaver.
The Silver Beaver award was introduced in 1931 as a means of recognizing Scouters who
provided distinguished service to youth on the local level. The award is made by the
National Council, upon the recommendation of the Local Council.
Jan was nominated for the award for his many years of service to the council beginning
with Cub Scouts on to Boy Scouts where he earned his Eagle Scout Award and on to many
years of service as an adult including the re-chartering of Cayuga County Councils oldest
Troop, Troop 1.
Mr. Zimmer participated in the Silver Beaver Court of Honor as this honor had been
bestowed on him in 2002.
Congratulations Jan, it is well deserved!
Fall Camporee
On Friday, September 29th, Troop 1 headed to Wellesley Island State Park to
participate in the “World Fellowship Camporee” hosted by the Hiawatha Seaway Council.
This was a great experience for the boys as there were over 3,000 scouts from
the United States and Canada.
We were joined for the weekend by Webelos from both Pack 59 in Weedsport
and Pack 38 in Auburn. A special thank you to both Packs as we enjoyed
there Dutch Oven desserts!
Popcorn Sale
Our “Popcorn Kernel” Kathy Tubbert reports that the boys sold $1300 worth of popcorn.
Our top seller this year was Jacob Smolak with $555 worth of popcorn sold.
2nd place went to the church with $246. We only had 5 of our 8
Scouts participate this year, that is rather
surprising since all of the money the Troop makes on the popcorn sale
goes directly to each participating Scout’s camping fund to help them
pay for Summer Camp.
November/ December
Camping
On the weekend of December 1st, Troop 1 will be traveling to Camp Babcock-Hovey
on Seneca Lake to camp.
This will be our Thanksgiving Campout and a Deep Fried Turkey is planned for the menu.
