--------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT NOTE: Dizzinews may NOT be externally archived
by ANY outside mailing list archive service or Web-based
mailing list or newsgroup portal service.
--------------------------------------------------------
This mailing list is a public discussion group for people interested in talking about inner ear balance disorders.
This is a semi-moderated discussion group which means that all messages sent to the mailing list will be posted, but the content of each post is monitored by the list owner to make sure that the goals of the mailing list are being achieved. Any post or series of posts that are counterproductive to the goals of the mailing list are subject to a polite request from the list owner to cease.
------------------------------------------------------
I. Mission Statement:
------------------------------------------------------
The Dizzinews mailing list is a public discussion group for people interested in information about inner ear balance disorders. The mailing list welcomes subscriptions from both the general public and health-care professionals.
Vestibular disorders include labyrinthitis, Meniere's disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), perilymph fistula, vestibular neuronitis, and others.
Symptoms may include dizziness, vertigo, nausea, tinnitus, jumping vision, fuzzy thinking, hearing loss, and many others.
II. The goals of the mailing list are:
------------------------------------------------------
(1) To provide information, analysis, debate, and commentary on vestibular disorders to people all over the world.
(2) To provide hope, support, and advocacy for people suffering from vestibular disorders.
(3) To create a global network of people interested in vestibular disorders.
(4) To maintain lists of people, treatments, and reports dealing with vestibular disorders.
III. Guidelines for Posting
------------------------------------------------------
Messages posted to Dizzinews are distributed to all members of the mailing list simultaneously.
Individuals posting to Dizzinews are solely responsible for the content of their postings. PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO POST MESSAGES THAT MIGHT HARM ANYONE PHYSICALLY OR EMOTIONALLY.
Readers of Dizzinews are advised that the posting of a message to the mailing list does not mean that any group or individual, other than the person who wrote the message, necessarily agrees or disagrees with any or all of the message.
1. Before posting for the first time, please see the most recent postings by reading the archived messages at:
http://lists.samurai.com/mailman/private/dizzinews/
This will help you get a feel for how the mailing list operates.
2. Please use your real name when posting to the list, and sign all your posts (anonymity has the potential to breed insensitivity).
3. Please ALWAYS include a descriptive entry in the "subject" portion of the e-mail header of every post you send to the mailing list. By descriptive we mean that it describes WHAT your post is about.
4. Flaming (personal attacks) will not be tolerated. A first offense will result in a warning and the second will result in removal from the list.
5. Off topic threads will not be tolerated. [A "thread" is defined as an ongoing discussion.]
A VERY IMPORTANT POINT FOLLOWS! This is a HIGH VOLUME mailing list of anywhere from 20 to 60 to 80 or more posts per day. It's also a mailing list that exists to serve dizzy, somewhat visually impaired people, so in order to remain effective it's important to not overwhelm subscribers with frivolous or unnecessary posts. Please make sure your posts are RELEVANT and TOPICAL. If you think your post would be more appropriately sent via private e-mail, then please do so. If you are unsure about your post, please e-mail the Dizzinews listowner at
or at dizzinews-admin@lists.samurai.com
6. Please do not send to the mailing list HUMOR POSTS taken from humor mailing lists or humor posts that are making their way around the Internet. These humor posts are considered non-topical and have a way of sidetracking the Dizzinews discussion. These type of humor posts are more appropriately sent via private e-mail.
Please note that the humor that comes out of our experience as people living with a vestibular disorder is welcome at Dizzinews and perfectly appropriate to post to the list.
7. Please do not send any ATTACHMENTS with the messages you post to the mailing list, or files that contain encoded text of any kind. Attachments include any text, sound or multimedia files, virtual business cards, etc.
8. Please quote the post you are responding to so that we can all follow along in the discussion.
A VERY IMPORTANT POINT:
When quoting text from a previous post using the "reply" command in your e-mail software, please quote ONLY the text that is relevant to the new message you are posting to the list. This is done so that subscribers reading your post don't have to wade through screens and screens of potentially dizzying irrelevant text, which creates a much more enjoyable, much more effective mailing list. This also helps to keep the digest version of Dizzinews to manageable proportions.
To quote only the text that is relevant to your new message, use the text cutting and deleting commands specific to your software. These commands vary from software program to software program. If you are unsure about how to achieve what we're asking you to do in this particular guideline, please contact the
.
9. If messages from the list to your address bounce back, you will be temporarily unsubscribed from the list. Please re-subscribe once the problem with your mail server has been corrected by your service provider.
10. Please make certain that your e-mail software is set to send mail in PLAIN TEXT format and not HTML, Rich Text, Rich Text Format, or RTF. This is especially true for Microsoft Outlook users since that program seems to be set to send mail as HTML as soon as it's installed.
11. Please DO NOT post COMPUTER VIRUS WARNINGS to the mailing list. Aside from being off topic, 99% of the computer virus messages you receive that have been forwarded to you from your friends are not true threats but are instead HOAXES (the equivalent of Internet chain letters). If you come across any computer virus threat that you think is real, please write to the
and he will investigate it and determine if a warning truly should be posted to the mailing list.
12. Please do not use the FORWARD function/button of your e-mail software to send messages to the mailing list. The Forward function includes with a post a bunch of routing information that is considered extraneous text and should not be posted to the mailing list. Use only the REPLY function/button (and trim all extraneous quoted text, of course).
IV. Keeper of the List:
------------------------------------------------------
The owner of this list is Jeff Mahler. He can be reached

or at dizzinews-admin@lists.samurai.com
