The following is a DN post written by Nancy T. about her time at Daryl's summer gathering. It was such a wonderful description of her experience that I asked for her permission to reprint it here.

It was a day to remember in Estacada, Oregon, when Dizzy Daryl and his wife Serene Sandy kindly hosted Ann Katz, Kris Watson, Mary Anderson, Cindy Fowler, Sherrie Pryor, Ruth Bartmess, and Nancy T. in Daryl's newly constructed backyard paradise, complete with marble floor, wooden benches, picnic tables, and a gazebo, surrounded by a forest of tall trees (keeping their distance from the house and Sandy's new car!). Many of Daryl's numerous children and grandchildren--and cats and dogs--joined in the potluck.

The barbecue was delicious--thanks to Daryl and his sons, who fixed an amazing variety of barbecue dishes, and also to Marianne Robards, who sent a yummy beef brisket via FedEx for the occasion! (she was unable to attend as planned due to family illness).

The sky was cloudy but our spirits were high. It was great to put names with faces and catch up with everyone. After lots of chatting, eating, and picture-taking, Ann gave us a very interesting and practical "course" in VRT--with handouts and demonstrations and discussions of various exercises. We must all have looked a bit goofy sitting in that gazebo holding up our thumbs (or Ann's business card with a big "A" on the back) and turning our heads side to side, up and down, diagonally... taking turns standing on a piece of foam... watching Ann sprint away from the gazebo holding up an eye chart and hollering, "Can you read line 8 from here?" :)

But bless her, she answered so many questions for us, and I think we all learned a lot. As many of you know, Ann is wonderfully dedicated to helping dizzy people in very practical ways wherever she goes.

Many, many thanks, too, to Daryl and his family for making this get-together possible. Especially to Daryl, who kept us in stitches with his wisecracks, as always!

It was great to see how much progress Kris and Daryl have both made since the DN potluck at my house last September. I remember how shocked I was when I saw how much some dizzy people can wobble!! Daryl was dizzy today due to all the excitement, but he walked around without a cane, and Kris looked so much steadier. Proof that people can and do improve.

Wish you ALL could have been here!

Nancy T.
