ACTIVITY TITLE: WITTY WORDS

SUBJECT AREAS: Literature, History, Sociology, Language

YOUR INVESTIGATION:

You are going on a long sea voyage where you will be confined for weeks to the vessel (your classroom) with new acquaintances whom you wish to impress with your wisdom and experience. Who better to provide you with witty sayings than Benjamin Franklin. Scientist, you say? Statesman, you say? What would he know of witty sayings? Let's discover!

Search this site and locate the works of Benjamin Franklin.
Select at least three witty sayings from each of two of his works and explain what they mean to your traveling companions (your classmates).

QUESTIONS TO GUIDE YOU:

  1. How would you locate an author in the library?
  2. Who was "Poor Richard"?
  3. What is an "almanack" and what purpose does it serve?
  4. What is a proverb?
