ACTIVITY TITLE: BIG BUCKS!

SUBJECT AREAS: Math, Life Skills

YOUR INVESTIGATION:

How often have we heard, When are we ever going to have to know how to do this in real life? I bet that you used math yesterday and you didn't even realize it!

You and your partner are on a mission! Each of your parents have decided that if you earn a B or better in Spanish you can stay on the basketball team and go on a shopping spree with $175 each. Search the web site provided and answer the following questions:


QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:

1. List the seven examples of how the basic knowledge of math can come in handy.

2. Predict what your final exam grade needs to be in order to stay on the basketball team

3. Using the formula, calculate your free throw percentage if you make 10 out of 16 free throw attempts.

4. What is the best price for two pairs of shoes?

5. Find the price of the shirt that would cost you the least amount of money.

6. Find the best price for two bottoms to match your new shirt and shoes.

7. Total the cost of the two new pairs of shoes, shirt and two bottoms. Make sure that it is not more than $175.00!


SUGGESTIONS FOR SHARING:

Cut out newspaper or magazine articles that show how money is used in everyday life. Share them with the class!
