ACTIVITY TITLE: Planning A Canadian Vacation
SUBJECT AREA: Social Studies, Geography, Writing
YOUR INVESTIGATION:
You are a travel agent who has just been asked to plan a Canadian vacation for a group of fifth graders who have just finished studying/researching a unit on Canada. Now they would like to see and experience some of the highlights of the second largest country in the world. Your job is to plan a Canadian tour itinerary, to include a memorable stop in each of the ten provinces and the two territories that will appeal to the interests of young adolescents.
To best organize this Canadian adventure, you begin on the east coast and quickly jot down the names of the Canadian provinces, followed by the two territories:
Newfoundland
Labrador
Nova Scotia
Prince Edward's Island
Quebec
Ontario
Manitoba
Saskatchwan
Alberta
British Columbia
Yukon Territory
Northwest Territories
QUESTIONS TO GUIDE YOU:
1. What are some of Canada's most visited national parks and historic sites?
2. What Canadian cities would offer attractions that fifth graders would enjoy?
3. Plan a stop that would allow the students to participate in a popular Canadian sport.
4. Introduce students to a bit of Canada's nostalgic cultural heritage by visiting with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (RCMP)
