Emigration
"You can't choose your ancestors, buts that's fair
enough; they probably wouldn't have chosen you."
- Anonymous |
Our Waller ancestors came to the United States via a circuitous
route - from England to Ireland (for a few generations), to Canada, then to
India for three generations, and lastly to Colorado, U.S.A. Jocelyn Macartney
Waller [7], patronymically named after his ancestor Anne Jocelyn
[9], left Ireland, choosing to settle in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He
was the fourth son of Sir Robert Waller, baronet of Ireland and Member of Parliament,
and Catherine Moore (see section "Wallers of Ireland"). He married
Elizabeth Willis of Newport, County Tipperary, Ireland, and had eight children.
While en route, he was shipwrecked and lost all his possessions but nevertheless
succeeded in reaching America.
Jocelyn Macartney Waller [7] the fourth son of Sir Robert
Waller, 1st Baronet of Newport and our ancestor, was born in Castle Waller but
moved to Quebec, Canada. He was commissioned clerk of the crown for lower Canada
in 1817 but was replaced because of his "reformist" views. He then
became for a brief time clerk of the Court of Oyer and Terminer. He then retired
to a country home, living on income from property inherited from his brother
Sir Robert Waller, 2nd. Baronet of Newport [5]. In 1821
he became a justice of the peace for Quebec and commissioner for the summary
trial of small causes in Saint-Gilles.
In 1822, Jocelyn Macartney Waller became a writer for
the Montreal Gazette, eventually leaving because of his "independent
views and outspoken articles". He later became Editor and Publisher of
the Canadian Spectator (originally Le Spectateur canadien), opposing,
along with French Canadians, union of Lower and Upper Canada. His views reflected
support for self-determination and opposition to the imposition of changes in
the Constitution by the government without the knowledge and consent of the
colonists. His writings were highly regarded and republished in Upper Canada,
the U.S., and England.and strongly opposed by the Tories. He editorially supported
the "essential right of British subjects to meet and discuss public affairs
and on the necessary balance between executive and legislative powers".
He was arrested on 18 December 1827 for "libel against the government",
charges which were not resolved before his death in 1828. Waller was much admired
as "a firm advocate of liberalism, a spokesman for French Canadians, and
an able and talented political writer with an amiable and virtuous character"
[1].
Jocelyn Macartney Waller died in 1828, followed soon by his
older brothers, which resulted in his son Edmund succeeding to the Baronetcy.
Sir Edmund married into the family of Arthur Guiness, succeeded by his son Sir
Edmund Arthur Waller, the fifth baronet.
Note: The number/letter code
preceding each entry begins (1) with Richard Warren Waller as described previously.
The symbols >, >>, >>>, or >>>> are used only
as markers to aid in identifying succeeding generations. (Note that the
codes for each descendent of Sir Robert Waller and Catherine Moore have the
prefix 1a2d1)
Names in boldface appear to be direct descendents of (1) Richard Warren
Waller and Dorothy Waller.

the Jocelyn family in Ireland, especially during the summer heat in India.
It is likely that Jane Amelia Waller met Capt. Henry Bryde at Tullymore

to Ceylon because of a family interest in the tea industry. |

Jocelyn Waller [5], the younger son of Robert, worked in
the East India Postal Service as Postmaster at Agra (the ancient capitol of India),
Poona, Karachi (now within Pakistan) and Aden [2]. He married
Elizabeth Power of Dublin, Ireland, who had received all of her education in a
convent. She died in India of the plague in 1903. All six of their children were
baptized Catholic but became Protestants, two of which became Methodist ministers.
Jocelyn came late in life to the United States and is buried in Longmont, Colorado.
The first son, Rev. William Dillon Waller (b. 1868), who married Annie Mary Nielson
of Denmark. He later emigrated to the United States, serving a church in Santa
Fe, NM. The other sons were Thomas (b.1878), who died unmarried, Harry Bernard
(b. 1882), who married (1920) Anna Kruger Jorgensen in India, the daughter of
a Danish engineer, and Alfred Jocelyn [4] (b. 1870), who emigrated to the
United States to study at Northwestern University on the basis of chance conversations
with some persons who spoke highly of the University [3].
Two sisters Eva and May both died unmarried.

Jocelyn Waller [4] (1870 - 1950), Agra, India; m. 1903 Katherine
Tarrence (1880 - 1965), Terre Haute, Indiana, USA |
Alfred Jocelyn Waller [4] was born in Agra, India, famous
as the capitol of the old Mogul empire and the site of the Taj Majal. As a boy,
he became fluent in Urdu (the language of Pakistan) and Hindi. He left Calcutta
for the United States at age 22 in order to attend Northwestern University in
Evanston, Illinois, near Chicago. He studied English literature, world history,
religion, Greek and Latin, later keeping a personal diary in Greek. He received
a B.A. in English Literature from Northwestern in 1896. He then entered the
Department of Graduate Studies for a Master of Arts in English and Anglo-Saxon
Language and Literature and secondary studies of the works of Tennyson, Browning,
and Longfellow, and Ferman, and Moral Philosophy. His thesis was a study of
Shakespeare's style. He was a founder of the Beta Pi chapter of Delta Tau Delta.
Alfred studied for the Ministry at Garret Theological Union
(associated with Northwestern) 1897-1898. He did not graduate from Garrett,
probably because he had already received the Masters degree from Northwestern.
He had intended to seek his Ph.D. but was advised not to, being told that a
Methodist minister should not have the title of "Doctor". Later, he
was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1914 by the University
of Denver, Colorado. Alfred married Katherine Tarrence of Terre Haut, Indiana
in 1903. After his marriage, he held pastorates in Winamac, Whiting, Yeoman,
Wanatah, Plainfield, and Terre Haute, Indiana, and in many cities and towns
in Colorado (Pueblo, Brush, Longmont, Loveland, Lamar, Julesburg, Palisade,
Wheatridge, Clifton, Hugo, Limon). After retirement, he moved to Denver until
his death in 1950 [4].
Alfred's children were Hardress Jocelyn Waller [3] (1905-1935),
who died prematurely in an accident, a daughter Alice Dorothy (born 1908), and
a son Richard (1915-1998). Richard's daughter is Sharon Rose Waller, Ph.D..
Hardress's son Hardress Jocelyn Waller, Ph.D. [2] (born 1928) has a son
Andrew Jocelyn Waller, M.D. [1] and now two granddaughters Nicole Alyce
(born 1988) and Leah Victoria (born 1991, and a grandson Jonathan Andrew (born
1998).
Hardress Jocelyn Waller and Andrew Jocelyn Waller are the co-authors of this
