Cathie Byers Hamilton

Words are power. That's why I write.
In "real life," my voice is quiet. Fifteen years after high school, I am still the girl that no one notices in the back of the classroom, the non-entity beside a locker in the hall. I may fold like a flimsy paper doll in oral debates over good parenting, the way that the elderly and poor are treated in this country, and the best entree on the menu at The Cheesecake Factory.
But, through writing, I have power.
Writing, to me, is a contradiction in terms: painful yet comforting, difficult yet easy, awkward yet graceful, discouraging yet hopeful. I believe that there is virtue in all written work, from great epics to old love letters, from grocery lists to soup can labels.
