Spanish Art & Architecture

To you, tremulous halo of the fields,
cutter of silhouettes, and turned to dark
by the dusk-creating brush: the sea yields
its color to the clouds, its shine and spark.

The confluence of many races and cultures including the Iberians, Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Goths, Visigoths and Muslims left an indelible mark on the people of Spain and produced a unique and rich heritage that can be appreciated in its beautiful paintings, sculpture, and architecture. The profiles and pictures included in this page offer a glimpse of this rich artistic heritage.

Aristocrats and prelates recognized since medieval times the importance of art as an expression of the human spirit and gathered many of the objects we now enjoy.  Of particular importance were the efforts made by King Felipe IV (1605-1665), a sophisticated art lover and passionate collector whose efforts during the Spanish Golden Age played a vital role in promoting, collecting, and preserving many of the art objects that are now a major component of the Spanish national treasure and are discussed within these pages.

Miraculously, a large sample of the works of Spain’s classical and modern artists have survived the test of time, natural disasters, social unrest, and neglect and can now be admired in museums, such as El Prado in Madrid, where large collections of classical geniuses like Velázquez and Goya, blend with the works of avant-garde artists like Picasso and Miró.  The Spanish landscape itself is a historical masterpiece in which ancient Roman and Muslim structures blend comfortably with their modern counterparts built by notable architects such as Gaudí and Calatrava
