This page basically came about because there is nothing else out there (on the web or otherwise) that gives any information on keeping snapping turtles in captivity. There are plenty of sites for box turtles, red-eared sliders, and even how to make turtle soup, but nothing specifically on snapping turtles. I found this out about a year ago when I began trying to find some information on my newly hatched snapper, Bahamut (my sister happened to find him in our backyard while she was mowing the grass). Since I could find nothing on keeping this type of turtle as a pet, I actually went to the library and did some research on snapping turtles in the wild and combined what I found with some general aquatic turtle info. I hope this can be of help to someone who has found themselves in the position of taking care of one of these little (soon to be very big) monsters.
I wrote that statement in 1996 and things have changed somewhat. Now there are several snapping turtle web sites along with numerous general turtle care pages. Most of these pages give good descriptions and provide plenty of general info but still don't help those of us with questions about our pet snappers. I've received several hundred e-mail messages with questions ranging from "How do I get these turtles out of my pond," to "how do I determine the sex of my turtle." I hope to continue to provide useful information for all your 'snapping turtle needs.'
