About the Author:

David Goodman is a writer, skier, and mountaineer who has written widely about the outdoors and other subjects. He is a contributing editor for Ski Magazine and Backcountry. His articles have appeared in Outside, National Geographic Adventure Sports Afield, Men’s Journal, and other national publications. He is a three-time winner of the Harold S. Hirsch Award for Excellence in Ski Writing, the highest award of the North American Ski Journalists Association—twice for his magazine writings and once for Classic Backcountry Skiing: A Guide to the Best Ski Tours in New England. He is also a recipient of the International Ski History Association’s Ullr Award for his writings on ski history in Classic Backcountry Skiing. Goodman is also the author of the critically acclaimed book, Fault Lines: Journeys into the New South Africa (University of California Press, 1999). His investigative and feature articles have appeared in The Washington Post, Mother Jones, Village Voice, The Nation, and other publications. David Goodman is a graduate of Harvard University. He has worked as a mountaineering instructor for Outward Bound and is a wilderness emergency medical technician. While his travels have taken him to five continents, Goodman still insists that his favorite place to explore is in his backyard, the mountains of the Northeast. He lives with his wife and two children in Waterbury Center, Vermont.
