German aviator, who identified himself as UFFZ Arndt Feddersen, was shot down and taken from a pneumatic life raft on 20 April 1944. He is shown leaving USS Menges DE320 under the stare of the crew and some Lansdale survivors. Two dead Lansdale crew members in stretchers are lying on the deck. Part of the 138 Lansdale survivors rescued by USS Menges DE320 disembarking in Algiers, 21 April 1944. Survivors in both Menges and Newell were given what ever clothing the crews could muster up. To these Lansdale sailors who had mounted a heroic fight against the German aircraft, going ashore out-of-uniform didn't matter.
