Eruption of Mount Vesuvius, 18 March 1944. This eruption illuminated the fleet anchored in the Bay of Naples off the city of Naples such that the ships could easily be seen by attacking German aircraft. Therefore, all ships moved to other anchorages. Lansdale moved to the vicinity of Castelammare, not far from the Isle of Capri. US Navy photograph
