This site is dedicated to former Rockingham County Deputy Sheriff Peter Saunders.

Deputy Saunders unselfishly devoted over 25 years (August 1976 - September 14, 2001) to cruelty investigations at the New Hampshire SPCA in Stratham, NH. During his career he removed tens of thousands of animals from abuse or neglect and was successful in bringing about the convictions of hundreds of people who were Cruel to Animals. His most famous case "KING" the pony still receives International acclaim and remains a Classic in the annuls of Cruelty Investigations. Saunders served for a time as the President of the New Hampshire Federation of Humane Societies and was a long time advisor to the New England Federation of Humane Societies and the New Hampshire Animal Control and Humane Officer Association. He still holds the Vice-Presidency on the New England Federation. On September 14, 2001 the NHSPCA dismissed Deputy Saunders.

Deputy Saunders wrote or revised a large percentage of the NH Animal Laws that you will find below. In 1995 and 1996 he toured New Hampshire giving seminars on Cruelty Investigations. Valiantly he fought for the animals we cherish so much, never realizing that he would become a victim of a misguided and reckless Brutus. The animals in this state will suffer greatly without him. He was the "last" of the true Humane Officers in New Hampshire and we owe so very much to his devotion.

Peter currently works with his wife Jan at their seacoast antique business "The Mermaid".
