Tennesee Valley Railway Museum
TVRM, as they are affectionately known, runs several different excursions. Their most frequent run is the steam powered Missionary Ridge Local which we rode. It offers a tour of their steam repair facility which is pretty much considered the "Cadillac" of all steam repair. Many of the steam railroads in the country contract work to TVRM that they may not have the ability to do. TVRM has a complete repair facility that could probably build a new loco from the ground up. You can also watch them turn the loco on a turntable for the return trip back to the station. Better pay attention, though, because the ride each way is over in the blink of an eye. Not kidding, probably about ten minutes each direction. They one hour trip they boast is consumed by the turntable demonstration and the backshop tour. Not to detract from the operation, though, as they are first class all the way. The people are beyond nice and the equipment and grounds are first rate. My recommendation is to look for the "All Day Steam" events. That's what I'll be looking for. TVRM is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There is tons of stuff to do, so plan for a couple of days and pack a lunch. We stayed at the Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel in downtown. The hotel is very large and is operated by Holiday Inn. There is a lot of history with the hotel. It actually used to be an operating train station. You could spend a day just exploring the hotel. Chattanooga has tons of attractions including Cival War points of interest, an incline plane to the top of Lookout Mountain, and my favorite The Tennessee Aquarium. That place is incredible. It took about two hours to go through all the displays. Words simply can describe it. I would highly suggest a trip to see all this city has to offer.
