October 2002

This morning when I stepped out of the house to get the paper I noticed something very different. The air had a definite autumn chill that caused me to breathe deeply. It was invigorating. Summer has gone; fall has arrived. The early morning air makes that very clear.

There is something else in the air these days. Every newscast and almost every talking head on television is announcing the drum beat of war. All day long we are bombarded with information from informed sources and, most likely, misinformed sources that war is inevitable. Perhaps it is...I honestly don't know.

I do know that we Christians need to fill the air with prayer. The leaders of all nations need to be supported by the sincere prayer that our world might turn away from violence and turn toward peace. I also know that we as Christians must undergird our lives with prayer so that in this time of chaos we follow the way of Christ. Only by being focused on Him can we resist the easy road of hate and revenge.

It is also time for us to reach out with words of assurance and hope to all within the sound of our voice. The chaos of the present time is not the way God intends for us to live. Furthermore, the Spirit of God hovers over this chaos calling men and women, boys and girls, rich and poor, powerful and powerless, to allow God to bring order and promise to this destructive pattern. I pray we will speak God's word of hope to an anxious world.

There is a lot in the air these days. Let's do our part to fill the air with words of hope and love.

See you soon in Sunday School and worship.

Grace and peace,

David
