July 2005
More Summer Fun
Today, June 21, 2005, is the first day of summer. Yesterday was still considered spring and somewhere after midnight on the 20th, a new season began. Had we not been told, who would have known? Not much changed between yesterday and today well, not much except that today is, interestingly enough, much warmer than yesterday. However, the increase in temperature has nothing to do with today being summer. Today is warmer because a new weather system, unrelated to the calendar, has moved across our region. Yet, summer has now officially begun and with that bit of news comes some customary patterns. Vacations, weekends away, yard and garden chores, trips to swimming holes and escapes to the cooler breezes of lofty mountains are all ways in which we enjoy the summer. I hope we all have lots of fun and, at various points during the summer, I hope we are spontaneously moved to give thanks to God for our times of re-creation.
Let me encourage you to include regular worship in your fun plans. If you haven't been attending worship start now; and if you are regularly worshipping with a congregation, please remain faithful. Not one of us would consider not eating during the summer, nor would we ever consider not eating because we could watch a cooking show on television. We all understand that our bodies need the nourishment provided by the food we eat. In like manner, each of us needs the sustaining power of worship, in the context of a community of faith, for our overall well-being. If we are rotund in body but impoverished in spirit, we are not well!
Take opportunities during this wonderful season called summer to have fun; include others in your activities and, by all means, be faithful in worship. After all, worship is an essential component of summer fun. I look forward to seeing your smiling, fun-loving face in worship!
Grace and Peace,
David
