Dravo Methodist Church and Cemetery

The Dravo Cemetery served the settlements of Dravo, Stringtown, Shaner, Robbins Station and Guffy Station from the early nineteenth century through the mid twentieth century. The Dravo Methodist Church was built in 1824 on land previously known as the Newlin Family Cemetery. According to tradition there was a small Indian village located here and there may have once been a Presbyterian Church as well. The Dravo Methodist Church burned down in 1920, the victim of a spark from a passing train. Although a building fund apparently existed at one time, a changing economy in the Yough Valley brought an end to many of the settlements served by the church. The last burial occurred in 1942. All that remains is a cemetery in which many stones have been damaged, lost, or moved. Any information about the church or its families would be greatly appreciated.
The cemetery is currently in excellent condition thanks to the work of Eagle Scout Jeffrey Mountain and his volunteer workers (Troop 90, Forest Hills, PA) and the ongoing efforts of the Elizabeth Township Historical Society.
