When the animals reached the fence line of the Finn Farm they
could hear Scott and Stacy calling them. They galloped as fast as
they could to the barn so they would not miss their evening meal.
The children scolded the Barnyard Buddies for not coming when
they were called. Scott and Stacy had begun to grow worried with
the animals delay and had almost come looking for them. They fed
and bedded down their pets for the night as darkness came.
Mike the Mule buried his face deep into his evening hay. With a
toss of his head all the hay flipped out of the manger and fell onto
the floor. "I really think it's a shame about those circus wagons," he
said as he chewed a mouthful of the small, sweet chaff that
remained in the bottom of the manger.
Bruce the Bull paused between bites of silage and answered,
"Yes, it is a shame for such beauty and heritage to go to waste. I
would love to have a chance to paint a wagon like that. The artists
back then were brilliant craft
people."
"I would have loved performing in a circus," squealed Polly the
Pig. "Gary the Goat said he remembered that they used small
animals like us to do tricks. Some even jumped through a ring of
fire!"
"What?" squawked Randy the Rooster. He flew to the top
board of Polly the Pig's pen. "Fire! No way are you going to jump
through a ring of fire! You're crazy if you do!"
"Settle down, Randy the Rooster. Don't get excited! Polly the
Pig didn't say she was going to do it, did she?" asked Mike the
Mule. "Anyway, I'm sure we could all do tricks in a circus. Gary the
Goat can climb up and down things; Polly the Pig can jump through
hoops; Bruce the Bull can balance balls on his head."
"I can believe that! He has a big head!" Randy the Rooster
screeched and flapped his wings in laughter.
"Now cut that out, Randy the Rooster!" scolded Mike the Mule. "It's not nice to tease other animals." "I won't do any silly tricks!" snapped Sofie the Sheep as she curled up on a fresh, crisp bed of straw. "I have more important things to do with my time." "I could do those tricks. Yep...I know I could! Yep...I could!" mumbled Gary the Goat as he made a small circle around Sofie the Sheep, then lay down beside her. Roberta the Rabbit hopped out from under Mike the Mule's manger. She had been eating pieces of clover that had fallen there. "I heard that my great-grandfather was a show rabbit. He was pulled out of a hat. It was a magic trick. I could do that," she sighed, "if I was prettier." "You don't have to be pretty to be pulled out of a hat, you silly thing!" Randy the Rooster crowed. "You're right, for a change, Randy," said Mike the Mule. He took another bite of hay, then added, "Maybe someday we could all do our tricks for the other farm animals and put on our own circus." Bruce the Bull suddenly bellowed loudly, "You've given me a brilliant idea! Why don't WE fix up those wagons. We could repair them with wood and nails. I could then use my most vibrant colors to paint them just like they used to be. We could invite animals from all the neighboring farms to see them and put on a circus, too." "That is brilliant, Bruce the Bull! We could restore those wagons! Let's do it!" Mike the Mule brayed. The other Barnyard Buddies got excited, too, and said, "Yes...Yes! Let's do it!" Early the next morning, the Barnyard Buddies loaded a small wagon with the supplies they thought they would need and started out for the deserted farm. Mike the Mule pulled the wagon that was packed with paint, brushes, tools and wood.
It took the Barnyard Buddies longer to get to the old farm,
because they stopped along the way to tell other farm animals
about their plan. Soon the entire countryside was buzzing about the
Barnyard Buddies Circus.
When they arrived at the farm they opened the huge doors at
each end of the barn to let in the sunlight.
They explored the interior of the barn and found the stalls where
the circus animals had been kept, many years before.
Mike the Mule tried on one of the harnesses a draft horse had
worn to pull the great wagons. Everyone laughed at him, because
the harness was so large. The horse that had worn it had to have
been a magnificent animal.
Polly the Pig found show trunks filled with plumes, feathers and
costumes. She squealed with excitement as she pulled out the
elegant wardrobes. "I would look perfect in these tutus!" she
exclaimed. "Here is a beautiful plume for your bridle, Mike the
Mule! And here is a fabulous beret for you, Bruce the Bull."
Soon, everyone was wearing something from the show trunk to
put them in the mood for the restoration of the wagons. Roberta
the Rabbit wore a jeweled collar, as she cleaned the dust and
cobwebs from the bottom of the wagons. Polly the Pig chose to
wear a blue tutu, while she cleaned the lower half of the wagons.
Gary the Goat, in striped clown pants, climbed the ladder
and washed the upper portion.
Mike the Mule stuck a fancy plume in his halter. Bruce the Bull
put on a polka-dot clown beret. Together they rebuilt the parts of
the wagons that had to be repaired. Sofie the Sheep, who was the
only one to refuse to wear anything over her beautiful wool, buffed
the metal part of the wagons until they glistened.
Bruce the Bull mixed beautiful, bright colors and repainted the
wagons. He was pleased that he was finally getting to do
something he dreamed he could do.
Randy the Rooster was in charge of cleaning the roofs of the wagons. He wore a funny clown hat as he swept his long wings briskly across the top. He pushed all the dust on top of those working below. Everyone got angry with him for being so careless. Polly the Pig was very upset because her skin and tutu got dirty. She insisted on them taking time out from their activities so she could bathe.
All of them took a break from their work to drink from the cool pond just beyond the barn while Polly the Pig bathed.
