North Side Exterior

NExtPic.JPG (19851 bytes) The two story on the right side is the older, Italianate part of the house. The original entry is on the left side of the porch. We believe most of the external ornamentation was removed when the 3 story was added.
The original entrance to the house was under the left arch of the North Porch. The porch has a couple of sheets of plywood for a roof. There is a small basement window directly under the arched window on the left. NExtBW.JPG (28118 bytes)
NWExtBW.JPG (26636 bytes) This view from across the street shows the deterioration in the chimney as well as the inset window on the mansard. The depth of the cornice is also apparent.

There is not much left of the original porch detailing but you can stil make out some of the cut work detailing between the posts. The posts have chamfered edges and at least the upper portions are older and possibly original. The handrail is currently 2x4 and 2x2's.
Just to compare the repaired south arch to what it looked like here is a sad view of aluminum storms gone bad. North Arch old.jpg (42363 bytes)

Below are two new pictures of the repoint work.  The brickwork below right is directly under the arch window above.   Basically all the bricks were removed up to the window to eliminate a coal door that had been added around the turn of the century or later.  It was mounted on a 2x4 header which termites had eaten away. At below right is a photo of the scaffolding used to repoint the chimney.
