Main Stairs 2d Run
border.gif (3365 bytes)

If you thought the First run of stairs were in bad shape, the second were considerably worse.  Our cat was making the treads bounce!!  The landings had a 2-3" drop in each corner.  To think that at one point during a homes tour, there was a person on every tread of every staircase and often two!!

How they did not collapse is a mystery

Every year a coat of paint, every occupant another contribution to the damage.  The attic door is nearly consumed by the drywall above.

Still, the stairs were not dark and spooky with the massive light from the skylight above.

Must apologize for no in progress pics, but they are not on this machine.  Unlike the first run of stairs, this one I did in one complete operations.  All treads, risers, trim and hand rail off and stripped before reassembly.  The newels were stripped professionally.

The trim from 2d to 3d floor is just an old growth pine with poplar hand rails.  Still very pretty and it sets off the cherry nicely

Did I mention the hand rails were poplar?

Yes, the top rail in this photo has more than a little of a greenish tint.  Think we might have wanted to stain them!!

But I like the natural look and it is a 2d to 3d floor staircase where most fancy folks would NEVER go.

Newels are all one piece, I had forgotten to urethane the ball under the second newel.

Getting much harder to believe these are the same stairs as the photo above!!

Of course the green hand rails should give that away!!

A view up the well showing the unbelievable beauty of the natural stairs.  Amazing that it was covered under as many layers of paint as I stripped!!
