1855 My only information about the McKenna family is that they probably came from County Monagan in 1840 to PEI, how I don't know. My ggf was Owen McKenna who married Bridget McCollough in Ireland & came to PEI. Who they traveled with, I don't know. They had five daughters and one son. Both Owen and his only son died of the plague in PEI about 1855. Bridget took the girl to Boston about1857-60. If anything happens to fit, I would love to know. "It was John Ing's newspaper which gave James Yeo the title "The Ledger Giant of Port Hill" though it probably only put on record what was already current in everyday gossip. Ings was an able young man who in due course employed a formidable leader writer Duncan McLean. Although The Islander's heading bore the inscription "Open to all parties: influenced by none" and though it always maintained a degree of editorial freedom it soon became the mouthpiece of the conservative elements in Island politics. Its position in this role was reinforced when in 1855 Ings married Mary Jane the third of Yeo's 5 daughters" Page 135 Westcountrymen in Prince Edward's Isle by Basil Greenhill and Ann Giffard" / mary <mary@maryanddon.com

All the info I know is that Charles (Philip's son) moved to Nappan, Nova Scotia and married Beautrice Alice Gould from Nappan and had 5 children: Chelmar, Delmar, Eileen, Edith and Helen. Also, I think that Philip has a brother. I know that Charles' father, Philip was from PEI also, and I would love to find out if Charles has siblings and also Philips siblings. My grandmother also told me they were from Cork county or another name she mentioned was Gallway in Ireland. The only thing I remember my grandmother telling me was that the family was from Morell, PEI, Lot 39. Thanks for any help that you forward me. Lisa Leger legerl@home.com

May 25, 1861 Census of lot 35 south has head of the household listed as Peter Beagan, blacksmith. Than that is crossed out and Owen's name is substituted and occupation is teacher. Owen has one girl under 5, one girl age 5 to 16, and one girl age 16 to 21. There are two males age 16 to 21 plus Owen. Owen is the only one listed as married and 1 death occured in the past year. The 3 oldest were born in Ireland and the 3 youngest in P.E.I.. One death has occured in the past year (baby John?) and all 6 are Roman Catholic. His rent is paid one half in produce and one half in currency. In the past year he harvested 9 bushels of wheat, 67 bushels of oats, 100 bushels of potatoes,25 yds of fulled cloth and 30 yds not fulled plus 30 lbs of butter. He has 1 horse, 4 neat cattle, 4 sheep and 1 hog. His neighbors are James Shepherd, Pat Sherry, Hugh Sherry, John McDonnell, W. McNally, William Koughan, Thomas McAdams, Pat Beagan, Justin McCarthy, Edward Trainor and Pat Woods.
The difficult part of this is explaining who the people are in this census. Owen is easy and we will call him #1, he is 34 and was born in Ire. The female under 5 must be Owen and Ann's daughter Margaret born in PEI which accounts for #2. The girl born in PEI between 5 and 16 should be John and Cecelia's daughter Mary Ann, #3. The only female that could be between 16 and 21 and born in Ire. would be Cecelia, John's wife #4. Of the two remaining one is probably Peter whose name was crossed off the census as head of household and could have been born in Ire, call him #5. That leaves an opening for a male between 16 and 21 born in PEI. Who that would be is a real question Mark. Even saying Peter is probably wrong because we have Peter Beagan's signiture on a land transfer in 1842, although I suppose that could have been his father. And the final question is where is Ann?
May 5, 1861 The census of lot 35 records Patrick Bagen as a farmer from Ireland with a family of 6, all Roman Catholics. Two males under 5 years of age, 1 female under age 5, one male age 5 to 16, and Patrick and his wife are listed between the ages 16 to 45. He has 50 acres of which 15 are under cultivation. His lease is calling for one half annual rent and his land is rated as 2nd best. In the past year he harvested 22 bushels of wheat, 100 buahels of corn, 200 bushels of potatoes and 100 lbs of butter. He has 10 yds of fulled cloth and 40 yds not fulled. He owns 2 horses, 5 neat cattle, 10 sheep and 2 hogs. His neighbors are Hugh Sherry, Mrs McNally, William Houghan, Owen Beagan, James McAdams, Justin McCarthy, Edward Trainor, Patrick Woods, Michael Handrahan and Owen McAvinnia.

Michael is also listed as a proprietor of one half acre of land leased to Duncan MacKillan whose occupation is innkeeper. Have to wonder if this is where John Beagan had been before being found at the head of the Seal River? Fittingly enough the inquest into Johns death was held at Thomas Sullivans of lot 49, also a innkeeper.

Nov. 28, 1862 "Hi Allen, I was looking through my notes, and I think I finally understand the Began/Egan connection. Michael Egan and Ann Beck had a son David Egan who married Johanna McLaughlin. David and Johanna's first child was Ann Egan born 11/28/1862. She was out of the house by the 1881 census, because it seems she was married to Patrick Began. From your notes: >>April 23,1879 James aeneas (sic), son of Patrick Began and Ann Egan is born >>and baptized on May 4th at St. Ann's in Kelly's Cross. From old vital >>statics records given to PEI Genealogy Society, complements of Doris Flannagan.
This would make sense, but put Ann Egan pregnant before her 16th birthday. She wasn't at home for the 1881 census, which was probably taken early 1881. I guess I could also have her birthday wrong. I'll have to look back and see where I got it. Anyway, do you have any information about Patrick and Ann Began? Are they in the 1881, 1891, or 1901 census.
Thanks, Joe Walsh <jwalsh@futuretense.com> (I have been told that is a reference to Ann Hagan, not Ann Egan. I have never found the reference . Allen Beagan)
1863 "Hi Allan Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. Thank you for your reply to my last e-mail. I have received more information regarding my Trainors from PEI. There is a Patrick Trainor, who was a ship captain, who was my John Trainor the first brother. John and Patrick's father was a Michael Trainor, who travelled from Ireland to NY. John came to PEI, prior to 1863. The following information will explain the stories. I have seen your sight on the internet and still cannot connect the Trainors.
Attached is more information I have received regarding my Trainor's on PEI; Any information you have would be greatly appreciated. An E-mail I received from a woman in the US. The info I have is unconfirmed from my father's notes. John Trainor born in County Monaghan, Ireland came to New York City with his father, Michael, and brothers, Owen and Peter. John worked for a contractor in New York city but for financial reasons took his family to PEI. They lived on a farm on Victory Road , Montague PEI on the Montague River. John was married to Maggie McKenna (maybe in NY because the notes say she had a brother who was a priest in NY). They had seven children, Patrick (only child born in NY, 1842), Margaret, John, Delia, Mary, Rosella, Catherine. John had two children Joseph and Peter. Joseph stayed on the farm in PEI. Peter went to Montreal, had 13 children and 21 grandchildren. Delia married Richard Cullen. Children were Rudolf, Frances, Mary(May), Lillian(Lily). My father was the oldest of his siblings and seemed to have heard the family lore.
What I heard most about was my grandfather, Patrick, who was a sea captain. He was lost at sea in Feb 1899 in the caribbean. He was noted for a rescue at sea and was honored by the Congress and the Queen of England. I am sorry now that I did not take more interest in these things when my father was alive. My elderly relatives don't remember. Margaret married Tom Troy and had two daughters Susan (married name Perry) and Emily (married name Gaughan) who both lived near Boston , Mass. Rosella married ? Mooney. Moved to Montana. Had two sons and one daughter, Rosella (McKinnon) who loved in Dorchester, Mass. Mary and Catherine did not marry. Mary lived in Boston, Catherine lived in Lowell and Boston. Both these women died in Boston. As an aside, in 1990 my father-in-law was operated on by a descendent of Margaret's. He knew the story of Patrick and had a picure of Patrick with the medal from the Congress and a sextant from the Queen of England. He gave me a copy of this picture as my father's was damaged. Dr Gaughan used to live in Alexandria but he is no longer listed as a resident . I don't know if he is still alive.
Your email hopefully will renew my interest in finding out about my Trainor predecessors. If I find anything I will send it on to you. Does this connect sound like your John? The information above is definitely the right Trainor family. The information I have collected that verifies the stories., follows: We could not locate our John Trainor, until 1863 on the Lake Map of PEI on Lot 51, (Victory Cross Road). On the 1880 Meachams Atlas, John Trainor owned 90 acres showing a home near the road. Once it was stated that he did not arrive on PEI from Ireland, that made sense. His wedding taking place in NY, also made sense, as we could not locate records on PEI.. Do you know why John went to PEI? And if so, did his father, Michael follow. Was there already relatives on Prince Edward Island???
Margaret Trainor (b. 1848 d. 1934) married Thom
