Don't be confused by the index below.. it does not contain all the names in this file. The original 570,000 bit file was not indexed and because of the size I've had to split it up into four pages. The name samples below cover 1765 to 1864. Use your search feature in your browser with samples below but don't include a prefix such as Mc or Mac and set your case selection to off.

The Little Hills of Monaghan

The little hills of Monaghan are often on my mind

The folk that left there long ago and the land they left behind

My home is on Prince Edward's Isle

My thoughts go back each day

To the little hills of Monaghan they seem so far away

My Granddad came from Kelly's Cross Grandma from Emyvale

They wed in Ballylischa before the boat set sail

To find Prince Edward's Island just off the far land shore

They said farewell to Ireland and friends they'd see no more

But I'm third generation and my dreams have all come true

I'm back again in Monaghan among my friends in Trough

I have seen the Rocky Mountains looked down Niagara Falls

The little hills of Monaghan are the grandest sight of all

I've often heard my Granddad tell of how it all began

The letter sent by Father Pat to his home in Monaghan

From the parish of Prince Edward's Isle they us told how they planned

To give a home to those who come to plow and till the land

So the Traynors and the McKennas the Kellys and the McMahans

They said farewell and then set sail never to return again

For 14 weeks they traveled through winter storm and gale

Until they reached Prince Edward's Isle and their new home Emyvale

But I'm third generation and my dreams have all come true

I'm back again in Monaghan among my friends in Trough

I have seen the Rocky Mountains looked down Niagara Falls

The little hills of Monaghan are the grandest sight of all

To those that asked for the origin ect of the song,

My wife and I were in County Monaghan last summer (2000) and staying in the little village of Knochatallon, and our host invited us and we attended an Irish music session that evening. It was held in an old country school house no longer in use, and the musicians were all teenagers. The name of the band was "Barratitoppy Ceili Band". One of the young ladies sang "The Little Hills of Monaghan" during this session and later gave us, their guest, one of their tapes. It was a great time.

But I have no knowledge of the song. I came up with the words by listening to the tape, which was not an easy task due to the little girls Irish Brogue. Maybe someone on the list will be able to help? Wayne bwstinde@net66.com

1767 William R. Vincent born in North Devon/Devonshire district of England married Mary Adams, born 1767, immilgrated to Prince Edward Island in 1774 from the USA.  Their son Robert Vincent born 1807 and was still alive at the census on 1870 and living in the household of Alfred Moreshead of Lot 7, and who married Jennifer Haywood.   Their son William Vincent, born 1839 in West Devon (Lot 9)  died 1885 in a lumber mill accident and he married October 15, 1862 Elizabeth Moreshead, born May 30, 1845 in Newfoundland, died 1931.       Anna MacDonald

1770 I noted with interest your reference to a Barbara Carr coming to PEI around 1779. My ancestors one James Smith and his wife Mary Carr came to PEI in 1770 on the Annabella. His dad was Neil ( Cornelius? ) McInnis, who had a home on lot 37 according to the 1860 name maps. Neil was married to Catherine Mackinnon, I found her grave marker in Hillsborough, but that was all. I believe this line of mcinnnis is from Duncan McInnis who came over on the Alexander in 1772, but cannot trace this back. MMcInnis@dcmde.dla.mil

1797 Mary, the wife of Dennis Ryan of Johnson's River, is born and immigrates from Thurles, Co. Tipperay. Sept. 11,1867 The Herald obit.

1797 "Hi Allen, I have a James Victor Egan (b. 1873, d. 1959), who married Mary P. McDonald (b.1880, d. 1926). James and Mary's births date seems to contradict the birth of Catherine and Daniel. James is the son of David Egan (b. 1827, d. 1911) and Johanna McLaughlin (b. 1826, d.1938). They are all buried at St. Andrews. The 1891 census shows several Egans in lot 37-2: Catherine 17 Daniel 8 James 1 James 41 Jane 38 Maggie 10 Martha 4 Thomas 6 Here is Catherine and Daniel, and the father James, but it looks like the mother is Jane. They are all listed as Church of England, as opposed to Roman Catholic, as are most of my Egans. David Egan parents Michael Egan (b. 1797, d.1854), and Ann Beck (b. 1806, d. 1895), had at least 7 children 6 born on PEI and one in New Foundland where they were married. The 1841 PEI census lists 4 male children under 16, 2 female children under 16, and someone other then Michael over 16, which could be another child. I believe the four younger male children to be David (confirmed), James (b. 1828), Richard (b. 1830, d. 1916), and Michael (b. 1831, also confirmed). This James Egan is listed in the 1891 census as 63 years old, and living in CTA5. Also listed in CTA5 is a Mary Egan at age 61. So, I am not sure if I have made things clearer or more confused. Sometimes because of large families, children would go by middle names. James Victor Egan went by Vic, and his brother Michael Joseph went by Joseph. This might be partly because they often had cousins by the same name, being names according to customs, based on grandparents names. So maybe Jane Egan married to James Egan above, was also called Mary. Anyway, let me know what you think. One of these days we'll get this figured out. Thank, Joe mailto:jwalsh@futuretense.com

1799 Mr. James McAvinn native of Co. Tyrone is born. Family Irish History Vol2 CS480 I7/5

I was doing research on my mother's maiden name which is McAvinn. She grew up in Melrose, Mass. My grandfather Thomas McAvinn grew up in and around that same area. All his family had come from Ireland to Prince Edward Island, Canada. We had a family reunion in Rhode Island two years ago and had some distant relatives come down from PE. 1800 "Hello, I am looking for any info on the surname FORSYTHE. John and Catherine Forsythe were my G-G-G Grandparents both born abt. 1800 . They farmed in P.E.I. and were buried at Dawson Settlement. I would like too find out what and where this is. They had a sons Frederick and William Forsythe, William being my G-G-Granddad and his wife Susan Walters, I would appreciate any help on either name Forsythe and Walters.....Tony Forsyth graywolf@nnex.net

1800 "First, my relationship to Malachi Reynolds. He was the brother--presumably a younger one--of Bridget Reynolds, who married my g-g-g-grandfather, Phelim C. Confrey, sometime around 1800 and of Catherine Reynolds, who married my g-g-g-g-uncle John Confrey at about the same time. There were two other Reynolds sisters who also emigrated to Canada, according to a letter from my g-g-uncle Father Thomas Confrey to his cousin in Illinois, the latter a descendent of the John Confrey above mentioned. The sisters married men named Clarke and Walsh in New Brunswick, according to the same letter, but I have not yet been able to discover their baptismal names nor to pick up their trail on this side of the Atlantic. Malachi Reynolds was from the part of County Leitrim that abuts Counties Longford and Cavan; the original Gaelic form of the name was McRanall. The family had formerly lived in Drumlish in County Longford, which is about a mile and a half from the border with County Leitrim and about eight miles from the nearest point in Cavan. They were evicted in 1793 and went to farm unclaimed lands of little worth stretching up over the border into Cavan. With the lessening of legal disabilities for Catholics leading up to the Emancipation in the 1820's the family then returned and settled in the Roman Catholic parish of Gortleteragh in Leitrim, where my great-grandmother, Catharine Confrey was born. The information on Fr. Malachi's participation in the land deal first came to me from a lady in Canada who is researching Reynolds on PEI; it also is contained in Fr. Thomas' letter to his Illinois relative, which we obtained at a later date. Should you ever find the deed with Malachi's signature, I would be exceeding grateful if you could send me a copy. That would be the very best kind of documentation of what seems to have been a very interesting and proactive effort to deal with the growing number of economic and religious regugees in PEI. Also, any other information that you come across in your files would be most welcome.Incidentally, what was your ancestor's name, should I every find anything that might be of use to you? Let me give you my business address and FAX number just in case, should either of those be needed. If you were to incur any costs in copying the deed or anything else, please e-mail me the details, and I will be happy to reimburse you for those expenses. Nancy Gray Phale D. 1801 "Hi my name is Yvonne Power and as you can guess I am doing my family tree. I am very excited after reading your website, but a little confused so I am hoping that you can help me. The John Power in your family tree is the John Power I am looking for - matched even with Cornilius Little. But my understanding is that John Power b. 1801 in Ireland married a Marie or Mary Stow b. 1809 in P.E.I. St. Dunstan's says that they were lawfully married. their children are Edward b. 1843; William b. 1851 John Power (Poer) b. 1835 and Margaret Power b nov 15 1830. I have Margaret's baptism certificate from St. Dunstan's and John and Marie are her parents and sponsered by Cornilius Little. I know of legal problems between Cornilius and John. The confusion starts when John died we found him in a 1881 census w/ marie in Ligan Cape Breton N.S. His son Edward went there also and his descendants are still in Cape Breton in North Sydney. Could you tell me exactly what you have on John Power and if you know his parents also. This is the first lead I have got and I would greatly appreciate any help. 1807 "ANN McPHAIL is thought to be a daughter of MALCOLM McPHAIL (MP114) and Flora McLean, and was born on the __ of __________ 1807/08, probably at Tobermory on the Isle of Mull in Argyll, Scotland and came to the Argyle Shore of Prince Edward Island with her parents in 1810. Her presence in this family is based on her not fitting into either of the Dog River (Clyde River) McPhail families at a time when all McPhails on the Island seem to have been in one of these three families. Flora McLean McPhail, her putitive mother, would have been about 38 years old in 1807, still of child-bearing age.

ANN married Patrick Brogan on the __ of ________18__ possibly at the Roman Catholic Basilica in Charlottetown, PEI. He was the son of ________ Brogan and his wife _______ ________, and was born on the __ of ________ 1799/1800 at ________, Ireland. This entry is the earliest McPhail with a Roman Catholic association, all others being Church of Scotland initially with a few Baptist families later on. If ANN was of this McPHAIL family, her marriage to Patrick Brogan and conversion to Catholicism as shown by her burial in a Roman Catholic cemetery, would have effected a dramatic separation from her family. That generation and subsequent ones would have dropped all contact between her and her family.

Patrick died on the 25th of March 1848 AE48 and ANN on the __ of October 1853 AE45 both at _________ and were buried in St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Cemetery, Tracadie, Lot 36 [36-1-66]. 1816 "Hello! I am hoping to find my long lost great-great-great grandfather. His son's name: Michael Conaty. Born about 1816 in Drung Parish; County Cavan (died 6 Feb 1913 and buried in Providence, RI United States). He left Ireland alone? by ship, sometime between 1832 -- 1858 and arrived in the New World (USA). Settled in Lexington Kentucky by 1858 and fathered a son there in 1858 (named him John Michael Conaty). The woman / wife/ mother of his child was: Bridget McEntee born 1826 (died 8 January 1888). Unknown where he entered this country nor which port. Rumor has it that he may have entered through Prince Edward Ireland, Canada. The National Archives ship passenger lists could not locate him on any of the eastern ports: PA, New Orleans, Boston, NY, Baltimore between 1848-1874 HIS PARENTS ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE STAYED BACK IN DRUNG PARISH, IRELAND AND DIED THERE. His father's name was Michael Conaty and his mother, Ellen Conaty (both over in Ireland). His brothers and sisters are unknown, if there were any. I am willing to pay $38.00 for this information: where they are buried, who his father was and names of any other children (siblings of the man at the top of this page). Thank you. I came across you pages of Cornelius Little and Brigit Costin, and appreciated much of the information that you had. Along with four other people, I'm currently researching the Blizzards, Costins and Praughts, all interrelated on PEI. Brigit Costin was the sister of Michael Costin who married Anne Praught who were the parents of Katherine Costin. Should you have any additional information or can point me in a new direction regarding these families, I would appreciate the information.

"Here is the paragraph you wanted: >From part of a recorded dialogue with Dan Hughes, son of Jack (John) Hughes. Three brothers came with their families - a Dan, Jim, John (he then corrected himself to say a Dan, William and John) - slept under a tree upon arrival and dug out stumps, cleared the land and build houses. Dan settled in Dromore and William in Sturgeon or St. Mary's Road. (Some of his statements he seemed uncertain of.) William had two sons, Pat and Ned. Pat was a wild sort who shot the horse from under the tax collector, was jailed and escaped to N.S. where he worked for a doctor. This shooting seemed familiar so I looked at the conversation with my Uncle Jim Hughes and this states - it was Dan Hughes "the elder's" brother Bob shot the horse out from under the tax collector. Shortly after all but one left for other parts...one we think went to P.E.I. and his name was possibly Terence. I did find records of a "Tury" as the earliest name resembling Terry in 1860.He was listed as Farmer ...5 males and 3 females in the household. My ancestor stayed in N.S. and settled in New Ross. They lost contact with each other so we are attempting to find a link to our ancestor John Boylan, one of the brothers. He was born in County Fermanagh Ireland approx. 1825. She was also from Ireland. They were married in PEI 1850. Their son was a teacher, then bought a store which had the post office in back room. His name was Joseph McCabe. His daughter Mary pretty much ran the store. Patrick McAleer came from County Monaghan Ireland. I don't Know the date of ship. He married Ann Mullin also from Ireland in 1843. The first children werebaptized at the Catholic church in Vernon River but in the 1860's they obviously moved to Fort Augustus. Word of mouth tells me they came from Ireland on the Lady Constable.. I haven't been able to corro borate it but it makes for quite a tale. Many were sick and died from typhus on that ship I am not familiar with the name Nellie Slavin. but one never knows. The only McCabe I am aware of moving to Boston was and uncle named James Aeneas McCabe. He went to work for the electric company fell into river and drownedback in 1916. 1830 "Now I have not yet really researched my Mooney line so only have "bits and pieces" of info from various relatives - living and dead. So the best I can tell you is that in County Monaghan at the beginning of the 19th century were my Mooneys who included Henry (an unwilling member of the Monaghan militia and an R.C. who came to PEI in l830 - and who was followed by his son, the future Hon. Robert Mooney who emigrated in 1831 from Coothill and yes, did settle near Tracadie and eventually at Peakes (landing?crossing?) He allegedly had three siblings - the aforementioned Mrs. Owen Trainor, who came with him in l830, a sister who married a ship s captain in Liverpool, Eng. and my ancestor, his younger brother Daniel. Daniel was allegedly employed at Leslie Castle (stableman?) when he eloped with a 15 year old Protestant named Gillis - and these are my direct descendants. We now date back in Canada to l835 when Daniel's son John was sent to live with his mother's brother in the Eastern Townships. I don't know the PEI "cousins" and have only recently found one who tells me I may have found some 3000 new "relatives" by establishing the connection between my John Mooney and Henry Mooney of PEI. Of course, I have no idea which of your four Owen's may have married a Mooney and pouring through your pages this a.m. did not shed much light. They paid passage and landed first in Newfoundland and eventually PEI in 1832 or 1833 on the Souris River. They had many children and William Bernard Mullally inherited the farm. He had about fourteen children with Hannah Gertrude Hughes from Morell, PEI. The youngest male, Howlan George Mullally, in turn inherited the farm from his father and had ten children himself. His youngest son Michael currently lives on the former farm's property. Michael's brother David Howlan Mullally (my father) lives up the road. 1833 Regrding the Wiseners of Lot 37 and 48:

With respect to your questions on James Weisner of Dawson's Grove. Is it the old area once called Clarkin, and which is now referred to as Watervale? (Which neighbour's Dromore on the West.) This was also referred to as Monaghan and the Monaghan Road. The river is the Clarkin River. The body of water is Wisner's Mill Pond. James Richard Wisner had the Heartz family dam the river in 1833. The Grist Mill was founded in 1834. The Wisners moved from Lot 49 in 1833, the original house built at that time is still there. The map is accurate. The saw mill came later as did the Post Office which was located in the house on the west of the river.  I have several James Wiseners for this area. It is a very common name in my family. My grandfather James Emmett Wisener still lives there, his uncle James Richard, grandfather James Jeffrey and greatgrandfather James Richard all lived there. If it is the 1881 Meechum's atlas, that would be Capt. James Jeffrey Wisner, married to Mary Carroll of Fort Augustus. The 1861 Lake map means that the house on the right of the river was that of James Jeffrey and the house of the Left of the River was James Richard's. With respect to Mrs Ann Wise, they are a separate family of Scottish/English descent. The Wisner are of course German. I find it odd that one would be in the Dromore area, as the closest Wise family I had heard of, had been in the Vernon River area. Kevin Wisener wisegen@cyberus.ca

Mary Carol she is probably the daughter of Terrence Carrol of Ft. Augustus shown on Lakes Map on Monaghan Road. I note there appears to be in pencill on the 41 census of lot 36 the name P Beagan next to the name of Patrick Martin which is the farm across the road from Carol's place. I think P Beagan took over Martin's farm just after the census but before it was certified. It finaly confirms to me why Carol and Beagan would be connected. In a undated proprietors map of lot 36 but later than Lake's, Terrence Carroll is shown next to B. Callaghan and going south on Monaghan Rd. are James Callaghan, Owen Simpson, Patrick Curley, James McKenna, James Lynn, ect. / Dan Koughan

1830's Hi - I am researching my great-great grandfather, Lochlin McDonald, who was born in Nova Scotia and lived on PEI around the 1830's and 1840's. His father was Donald McDonald, married to Teresa Gillis.  Does this sound at all familiar? Thanks. Tracy levitt8@pacbell.net

1834/41 In the 1881 census Ann Trainor Beagan says she was born in 1834. In the 1891 census she becomes younger as she claims to have been born in 1840. In the 1901 census she becomes even younger and claims now to have been born in 1841. Her grave stone reaches a compromise and says she was born in . All accounts agree she was born in Ireland.

1837 Days of Yore in Dromore!!

Among the early immigrants to our Island shores were Owen Coyle and Owen McManus who became the first settlers in Dromore in 1837. the Coyles started the first sawmill in the district and this was later taken over by John Callaghan, Peter's father. At the Mcmanus home a *station* was operated, i.e. the mass was said and people made their Easter duties there. Later(, at) John F. Callaghan('s).

Around 1840 John McLeod who had married Mary MacKinnon came to the district. John did not come from Scotland himself. His father did. For some years previous they had lived in Clarktown and on arriving here lived for some time on the north end of the farm on the *Old House Hill* in a log house facing the Marsh Road which was the public road then. By 1880 they were situated at the present site ---- pm (sic) the main carpenter of the building of the present house was James Corrigan the brother of John. A list of the MacLeods family is listed in his will, proven 1882. Of these Angus who lived for a time at the Low Well and who married Bridget Hughes eventually became the proprietor of the farm.

In 1850 at the time of crop failures in Ireland, three Hughes men Dan, John, and one other came to this area. Frank senior, a young boy at the time came with them. Frank Senior was the son of Dan. Dan was married to an O'Brien. Three McGuirks also came at this time and of these Michael senior is best remembered and his sons and grandsons were a strong segment of the community for many years.

The first school in Dromore was situated at MacDonalds, south of O'Brien's corner. By 1880 the school was situated at the middle of the Dromore. Behind Jack McGuirk's (not sure of name)

Among the various teachers who taught in this district, mention is made of William O'Brien who taught there many different times over a period of over half a century, and easily two generations of people received their early education from him.

Father John O'Brien was a native of Dromore, having been brought up at O'Brien's Corner, for many years the field of his work was in Seattle.

Father Brady of Vernon River gave Dromore its name after Dromore in Ireland.

The family of John McLeod and Mary MacKinnon,

1838 "Dear Dr. Mannion, Thank you for your response. I do have the DCB info and am after the referenced materials. As it so happens Sister Marie Michael Power of the Sisters of Mercy sent me a copy of some correspondence from Ian Hearn with his address just last night. There is also a wonderfully long letter (9 pgs single spaced) written by Ellen Little, daughter of Mary Little (Philip. John, and Joseph's sister) from around 1938 (sic). She claims that Philip was actually on his way to either the US or NB when the ship he was on had problems and ended up in St. John's. The locals prevailed on him to stay as there were no Catholic lawyers in town at the time. There are also great descriptions of John and Joseph's personal lives. If you wish, I will keep you up on my research. Sincerely, Mike" mmccue@draper.com
