1865 "I am searching for information on Nickolas Power, my great great grandfather. His son, John Joseph, was born in 1865 in Souris. I've located John Joseph's mother, Elizabeth Wilt, and have had contact with Wilt family relations. To the best of their knowledge, Nickolas was not in the family picture as born out by the 1881 census (She is listed as head of household under the Wilt name). It is quite possible that they never married. One elderly aunt seemed to recall that Nickolas had died of Small Pox. (She was quite elderly when interviewed, and her information may not be reliable.) If Nickolas didn't show up on the 1881 census or the 1861 census, does anybody have any ideas as to how I might verify his existence? I would appreciate any help or information you could offer." March 16, 1865 "Letter from the Under Sheriff Curtis to John Morris Esquire High Sheriff setting forth resistance by parties residing at Ft. Augustus on Monaghan Settlements. Read in Council 16 March 1865.
Charlotte Town P.E.I. March 14, 1865
John Morris Esq. High sheriff
Sir; I have to report that on Friday morning last the Tenth day of March inst I proceeded to Ft. Augustus and Monaghan Settlement to serve several common Procepess at the suit of Rev. John McDonald on James Callahan, Patrick Brogan and others. James Callahan keeps a tavern, I enquired for him and was informed by his wife that he was in Charlotte Town. The parties in the house did not know me at first but soon discovered who I was and what my business was, when Callaghan, son of the said James Callaghan ordered me out of the house, I replied that I would not go, asking at the same time the wife of the said James Callaghan if her husband was not a Licensed Tavern Keeper, and receiving for answer that he was I ordered my dinner and food for my horse, after dinner on making ready to leave three or four persons came around the sleigh one of them I was informed was a son of Owen Simpson one of the others was the before named son of James Callaghan the others I could not discover the names of , they told me not to dare to proceed and farther along the road and I replied that I had as good a right to travel the road as either of them and had my duty to enforce and would do it, that I was acting in the capacity of Sheriff and expected to be treated with civility and proceeded along the road and before I got on five chains I met another of Callaghan's sons on horseback with a tin trumpet in his hands, he turned his horse crossways on the road and endeavored to prevent my getting along and ordered me to go back and dared me to go any further. I asked him the reason why I should go back was I not at liberty to travel the road as well as any other person, he replied that I would find that out pretty quick that the devil much farther I would go until I would get my head, by this time the parties I had left behind at Callaghan's had nearly come up to even one even standing, I than told them all that I should proceed let the consequences be what they may , I went on past four or five farms when I discovered there men in a field two of them had a stick in their hand the other had a gun They stood and looked at me and shortly proceeded to the road towards me, when they came to the gate they stood I went on and never spoke to them and a little farther on I met a man on the road with a pitchfork in his hands and two boys each of them with a stick, they said nothing but looked ferocious. I still proceeded on and found at every farm people with large sticks in their hands all apparently acting together as the trumpets were blowing in every direction. I nevertheless proceeded on to the cross roads at Murrays Forge and turned to the right on the road leading to the Donagh Settlement and looking up to the right discovered a number of men armed crossing the field on the angle caused by the two roads. Most of them with sticks and apparently for the purpose of stopping me and preventing my proceeding along the road. When I noticed what appeared to be their intentions I drove on faster and thus got clear of them and on looking back I discovered a crowd of persons on the road behind me. From all that I witnessed I am constrained to inform you that it will be useless for me to attempt to do any duty as your Under Sheriff in that locality without being backed up with a strong force, to these facts I am prepared to make oath. I am sir your Obdt Servt, James Curtis under Sheriff" Acc 2514 Item 10

Read in council 19 September 1865 Refered to the Hon Atny General as to the conduct of the Constable refered to---.
Lot 48 September 4th, 1865 To the Administration of the Government
Dear Sirs; A complant I now lay before you. That a constable or Bailiff cannot travel on the public road without being abused by a lawless mob of those tenant union men, both with their tounges and their tin horns, they are all of very bad character or the most part of them who mis act on the public highway.
I have been three days at different intervils serving summonses for the Small debt Court and there had been each day 100 or 150 men and boys, belonging to the union, They were not like men, they were more like devils, and a constable among them siding with them being William Farquherson of lot 48 who also took part with them. I would like a stop would at once be put to the blowing those horns for a person traveling the said with a fractious horse would be in danger of being killed or hurt by the beast running away. Dec.4,1865 Trying to track Richard KEEFE of Rollo Bay. In his will of 4 Dec 1865, [which appears to be a copy, since all the handwriting, including the 'signatures' of he and three witnesses, is in the same hand] he asks that his body be 'decently buaried at St. Anders[sic].' I can find no trace of such a cemetary/parish/community. I suspect that it is a misreading [by the transcriber?] of St. Andrews. There does not presently appear to be a cemetary of such name in the vicinity of Rollo Bay (west of Souris, Lot 44). I wonder if there were a cemetary/parish of such name, now renamed? In the 1861 census there were five persons in the household, one Catholic, the others Presbyterian. I suspect that Richard was the sole Catholic, and was expressing his wish to be buried in Roman Catholic consecrated ground. (It is not common in my experience for the testator to express a desire for a specific burial, unless with a deceased spouse or child.) Can anyone shed light on this? Also looking for information on his wife's name--given, surname... Stanley L. Johnson sjohnson@gwi.net

1867 "Hello, my name is Tammy LaForme and I was wondering if you might have any information on Margaret Ellen McKenna b. 1867 Hope River PEI, she was the last member of her family born there. There was a James McKenna listed in the census for the Hope River area and I was wondering if this may have been her father. Ellen was never listed in the Hope River census so I believe she was born between census years and they moved out of Hope River soon after she was born. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I have come to a dead end. Margaret Ellen McKenna married Frank McGregor and they had their children in PEI, I believe Charlottetown but I could be wrong. Thank you Tammy LaForme wlaforme@home.com

Allen,
On the file you attached I was able to read about Anne Halfpenny, Sarah Wickham, James Doherty and a William Halfpenny. Sara Wickham Doherty and James Doherty are my great-grandparents. James Doherty was the son of Catherine Halfpenny and John Doherty. I am having great difficulty finding any info on Sarah Wickham's parents, James Joseph Wickham and Mary Elizabeth Vantassel. I have been digging and digging and haven't had much luck. I was just at the family history center last night and found death notices for them on a Master Index for the Heritage Museum. They died in 1901 and 1903 but I don't know where they were from. Sarah Wickham was baptized at St. Dunstan's in Charlottetown in 1875 as was James Doherty. One of Sarah daughters, Katherine Wickham, married a William Hodgson. Her other daughter, Bertha Doherty married James Duffy. I am related to the Gaudets, Gallents, Doucetts, Blanchards, Arsenaults, Duffy, Doherty, Halfpenny, Wickhams from PEI, All four of my grandparents, on my mother's side, were born in Charlottetown or Rustico. As a young child of three, I remember Sarah Doherty, my great- grandmother being at my birthday party. I found Catherine Doherty living with her mother, Anne Halfpenny, both widowed in the 1881 census and James Doherty/Dogherty age 10, James Halfpenny 35, laborer living with Francis Keenan family. 1873 My birth Grandfather was John Wallace MORTON Larkin, born Dec 9 1902 (going by memory) and married Aletha Campbell(June 28 1907, Boston) (her parents James Andrew Campbell b. 1873 & Marg Agnes MacDougall) moved and died early, down your way - Boston 1915. For that reason, as an eight yr old, she was returned to PEI causing my Island roots. I was born of an Island lady, in Montreal where I was adopted by Rioux/Regan (from Co. Roscommon, Eire). We understand JA Campbells parents were John Campbell who married Annie Laura MacNeill (aunt of LM Montgomery) OR some hearsay - that it was ANNIE Thompson - but I can't find any record of James Andrew Campbell's connection to any of the above (can't find an Annie Thompson). Word is that as he was Protestant, marrying a Catholic McDougall, he was strucken from the family record...I suspect some truth to it but can not fathom a 'disappearance'. I'm beginning to think maybe it was an out of marriage birth, consequently the hearsay names Thompson vs MacNeill. Certainly the Campbell/MacNeill children's names are repeated in my grandmother's Aletha's (has Alzheimers at Prince Edward Home, Ch'town) family...often a clue. Morton Larkin born in Darnley:

(Mort ran the New Glasgow Creamery for many years now PEI Preserves) I can't trace the Larkin line too well especially to Cork, Eire from which it said they hailed from. I suspect they actually came from Galway-just a hunch. Frank FRANKRIOUX@hotmail.com
