Boating
We
are currently cruising on our 47 foot power boat "Destiny" on Lake Champlain in
Vermont. I have a US Coast Guard 100 Ton Masters License and assist with
activities as part of the Winooski Valley Sail and Power Squadron, which is the
local squadron of the United States Power Squadron. We are members of the Royal
Savage Yacht Club in Charlotte Vermont where I am currently serving as the Vice
Commodore. We try to spend as much time living
aboard on the weekends in the summer as we can.
I
have been boating since I was about eight years old. I started on Long
Island Sound sailing Blue Jays. My father had a Lightning. I have chartered
sailboats in the Virgin Islands and spent many summers crewing for racers from
the Lake Champlain Yacht Club. I sailed a Tanzer 22 for several
years then a Catalina 34. As they say, at some point,
everyone goes to the "dark side" (i.e. switches to power boating). It's
just a question of when.
In the fall of 1999, we decided to trade in the sails and search for a power boat. We looked at boats down on the Connecticut shore and several on Long Island. On an excursion to New Jersey to look at another set of boats, we stumbled upon "Destiny", a 47 foot Marine Trader "Tradewinds", in Tom's River, NJ. She had been unattended for some time and was in need of a good cleaning, though she was structurally very sound. We spent six weekends traveling from Vermont to New Jersey to get her ready to bring up to Vermont.
In
the Spring of 2000 we brought her up the Hudson River and through the Lake
Champlain Barge Canal System to Lake Champlain. It was a real
adventure.
We try to spend as much time as possible living aboard on the weekends in the summers and have traveled off the lake four times, once to Quebec City, once to Montréal, our 2004 trip to New York City and our 2006 trip to the Thousand Islands.
Some day we hope to do the "Great Loop" trip - up the Richelieu River to the St Lawrence - west across the great lakes to Chicago - down the center of the country (Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee rivers) to the gulf coast, across Florida - up the inland waterway to New York - and up the Hudson back to Lake Champlain.
