The Whale
Shaat al-Arab, Iraq  2002

This rusting hulk of a Cuban sugar ship lies like the carcass of a beached whale. It was bombed during the first Gulf War and lies in its shallow water grave. Behind the ship lie large silos where grain and sugar had been off-loaded. As we traveled in a motorized dory up and down the Shatt al-Arab near Basrah, we could still see the remnants of other relics of war lying in the river.
