Mother & Child
Baghdad, Iraq  2002

Mother and child is a universal symbol of care and nurture that communicates across all cultures. This mother in the Al-Monsour Pediatric Hospital in Baghdad holds her sick and ailing child as he suffers from an undiagnosed water-borne disease. Iraq’s water treatment plants were bombed during the Gulf War. Even though most have been rebuilt, the water is still unhealthy because sanctions prevent purifying chemicals and spare parts from being imported.
