WEEKLY JAMS
Shebeen Irish
Sessions
Every
Sunday afternoon 3-6 pm
Shebeen
Restaurant, C'ville
e-mail
Blue O'Connell:
- A traditional Irish Session, we
play the session repertoire that is used all over the East Coast (and
the
world, I guess). Even as a complete beginner, you would certainly
recognize a
number of these tunes. We also like to add in new tunes learned from
cds,
players' own compositions, a little Old-time, and lots of contra dance
tunes.
Our audience is made up of people who come into the Shebeen for a late
Sunday
lunch, and who even applaud for us! General session-playing rules: each
tune
gets played through 3 times, and no sheet music in sight, although both
rules
get broken occasionally. Also, no talking during a solo. Our goal is to
have
lots of fun, laugh a lot, maybe learn a new song, meet new friends, and
get a
thrill out of playing great music. Draft beers $2.50!

BIWEEKLY JAMS
Jazz
Jam
2nd
and 4th Thursdays, 7-10 PM
Jefferson Heights (Rt 250 E, Pantops Mtn, Charlottesville)
e-mail Larry Simpkins:
If you are a folk musician
with a
yearning for a little swing and syncopation in your life, this jam is
for you.
If you play a brass or mighty woodwind instrument, this is your place.
Not to
mention, if you play percussion, or any electric instrument! We get
together to
play jazz standards in incredibly strange keys (from a folk musician's
point of
view) like F# and A Flat, and have a great time doing it. Bring your
music
stand, jazz fake book, microphone & amp, and if you are brave, your
singing
voice. We have a great audience, the residents of Jefferson Heights who
sometimes join in for songs or dance in the aisle. Sometimes we sound
awful,
like when someone calls an unfamiliar song and we are forced to
sightread. But often we sound GREAT - sometimes the music just clicks
and by the end of the song we are all
exhilarated!

Pete Vigour:
- The original traditional
Old-Time
jam in Charlottesville, this jam has been going for over 25 years.
Old-time
music is Appalachian folk music, brought over from the British Isles
and
Western Europe by the early settlers, and which developed into a
uniquely
American sound. It is the forerunner of bluegrass and country music,
but in
itself maintains a purity and simplicity that is refreshingly
invigorating. In
these jams, we take turns calling a song, and then we play it a number
of times
until the musical experience peaks, and finally the caller raises his
or her
foot to indicate that the song will stop. I think of it as trance
music. People
bring fiddles, banjos, guitars, harmonicas, mandolins, dulcimers, and
other
traditional mountain instruments to the Old-time jams, and we always
have a
wonderful evening.
- Beginners are very welcome. So are professionals, and everyone in
between.
- The Old-Time jams meet at
Westminster House, formerly the Prism Coffehouse, which has
become the home of the Blue Ridge Irish Music School (BRIMS) (effective
June, 2006). The building is located at 214 Rugby Rd, on the corner of
Rugby Rd and
Grady Ave. Enter the parking lot from Grady Ave.
MONTHLY JAMS
Belmont
Park Bluegrass Jam
2nd Sundays, 3-6 pm
Belmont Park
Druid Ave, Charlottesville
Contact Jeff York:
- New! Just started in May, 2006. Finally, Charlotteville has its
own Bluegrass Jam, and a friendly one at that!
- This jam is for folks to get together and play some bluegrass
music (but of course, we play whatever we want). Many of the tunes are
the same as oldtime, but we will pass around the melody, and may even
stand up while we play! :) It should be a friendly environment to
practice soloing, rhythm playing, improvisation on "breaks" as well as
singing and most importantly, having fun. All non-electric instruments
welcome.
- Belmont Park is one block east of Avon Street. It is just like
jamming at a bluegrass festival. Bring a chair and water (no alcoholic
beverages in the park).
Piedmont
